In the first quarter of 2023, over 830,000 foreign tourists visited Laos People’s Democratic Republic after the government announced the opening of the country from the beginning of 2022. Most of the foreign tourists are from Thailand, China, Vietnam, South Korea and others.

As the Departments of Tourism Development, Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism reported in early May 2023: After the government announced the opening of the country from the beginning of 2022, it was seen that tourists began to flock to visit the Laos PDR in large numbers, mainly tourists from Thailand, China, Vietnam, South Korea, Europe, America and other nationalities whose destinations were: Luang Prabang World Heritage City, Vang Vieng District, Phuong District, Khammouan Province and the south of Laos. Most recently, officials from the Department of Tourism Development have reported that up to now, about 830,000 tourists have visited the Laos PDR in the first quarter of 2023. The government initially set a goal to make 1,800,000-2,000,000 tourists visit within 2023, but actually looking at the overall trend, it may be higher than the target. The reason why tourists come to our home is due to many factors such as: international media and international magazines have issued news that helps promote Laos widely regarding popular tourist destinations, as well as spending for cheap tourism! There is also a Laos-China railway that facilitates convenient and safe travel. The government has improved the tourism atmosphere – a process assisted by the opening of cross-border train services between Laos and China.

Recently, the Laos-China Railway Company reported: Between the opening of the Laos-China cross-border train service on April 13th-23rd, 2023, it was found that there were about 4,300 tourists using the Laos-China cross-border train service – of which there were nearly 3,000 Chinese tourists and the rest were Laos and other nationalities. In fact, the travel time from Vientiane capital of the Laos PDR to Kunming city of China takes about 8-10 hours – travelling a distance of just over 1,000 kilometres – which is an important part of encouraging tourists to use the train instead of airplanes and buses because a) it is safer, b) travel can involve many people, and c) the atmosphere of the lifestyle of the Laos people can be experienced by ethnic Chinese people!

Meanwhile, Mr. Bounleom Manivong, Deputy Governor of Luang Prabang province gave an interview to the media recently that: Luang Prabang is a tourist destination for both domestic and foreign tourists, with a variety of natural, historical and cultural tourism resources. Currently, the province has a total of 228 tourist attractions, including 111 natural attractions, 78 cultural attractions and 39 historical attractions. But the most interesting thing is that the tourist attractions that are very popular with both domestic and foreign tourists are the cultural and natural tourist attractions such as: Quang Si Temple, Chiang Thong Temple, Phu Si, various other Buddhist Temples, Museums, the Thum Tinh Caves and the Luang prabang. There are various activities that are unique to the people of Luang Prabang, such as wearing traditional clothing, unique food and experiencing the lifestyle of the local people. In the past 2 years, there were 883,096 tourists who visited Luang Prabang. In this, 483,765 domestic tourists, 399,331 international tourists – with the average income from tourism amounting to more than 336 million US dollars. Along with this, Luang Prabang province has 97 hotels, many resorts, 400 guest houses, 311 restaurants, 97 travel companies, 19 entertainment stores, 36 massage and spa shops, 553 national tour guides (with at least 126 women performing this role) and 41 provincial tour guides (including 11 women). All of this development has continued to attract tourists to continuously visit Luang Prabang each year!
