Translator’s Note: I have checked for updates concerning this case and the official version of events remains ‘unchanged’ – despite a number of investigations. The general tone of the Russian-language reporting, however, remains ambiguous and ‘questioning’. Having also checked a 2021 Russian-language source – it does seem that Vadim Kostenko (Вадима Костенко) was the first Russian casualty in the Syrian Campaign (dying on October 24th, 2015) – although I am told that an English-language reference (the pro-US and anti-Russian Wikipedia) lists one ‘Edward Sokurov‘ (346th Special Purpose Brigade, Spetsnaz GRU) as dying on ‘October 1st, 2015’. Having cross-referenced Russian-language texts I can confirm that Sergeant SOKUROV Eduard (СОКУРОВ Эдуард) did indeed die whilst serving in Syria prior to Vadim Kostenko. The distinction seems to be that Vadim Kostenko was ‘Contracted’ to serve a set time and in a set place – and was not a Career Soldier – or a Professional Specialist as was Edward Sokurov. Vadim Kostenko, therefore, was the first ‘ordinary’ Russian Army soldier to ‘die’ in Syria (but was the ‘second’ to die overall). Still, given the Great Patriotic War numbers that are dying in Donbass today – discussion of individual cases of mortality (confronting US hegemony around the world) seems almost superfluous and self-indulgent by comparison! Vadim Kostenko (Вадима Костенко) – was the first Russian soldier to die in Syria. He was buried in a small rural cemetery in the Krasnodar Territory of Russia – with full military honours! About 300 people came to say goodbye to Vadim – although none made any solemn speeches – as everyone was weeping tears of sadness. According to the official version – Kostenko had committed suicide – and on this basis. the local Russian Orthodox priest REFUSED to officiate over the burial – or offer any sacred rites. According to reliable sources within the Ministry of Defence told Gazeta.Ru that Kostenko committed suicide after making 10 unanswered calls to his girlfriend. Later, in an interview, the girl herself stated that she did NOT believe that this version of events led to his suicide – or would have caused him to commit suicide!
It was cloudy outside. From the early morning – people kept coming to Kostenko’s brick house on the Grechanaya Balka Farm: classmates, villagers, schoolchildren, military men in blue flight uniforms and in ordinary camouflage. Everyone was paying their respects to an open coffin stood in the yard. In it lay a young man with a pointed yellow-blue face, covered with a shroud up to his neck. The neck and lower part of the face were covered by a wide collar of a blue shirt. Nearby is a photograph of the deceased, a picture of a religious icon, three military men with the flag of Russia and a black mourning ribbon tied just behind the coffin.
At the entrance everyone was met by Vadim’s younger sister – who had tear-stained eyes. She spoke softly, barely holding back her tears. “Everyone sympathizes and weeps, you can see for yourself,” she told Gazeta.Ru. His parents would not leave the coffin – sobbing all the time. Outside the gate were four military vehicles – all carrying black and red mourning bands.
At 11 am a local priest arrived – he was in a cassock but without a cross. He went into the house, talked a little and, apologizing, left. Vadim’s parents tried to arrange a funeral at the local diocese, asking permission, but they were refused – the Orthodox Church – they were told, did not perform funerals for suicides. Meanwhile, families of mourners who came to the funeral said that Vadim’s body allegedly showed signs of a violent death: the deceased allegedly had a broken nose, a broken jaw, and a broken skull (from behind). At the same time, other neighbours who seemed to have examined the body, but where of the opinion that these other injuries could not be found – they say that there was (allegedly) an independent expert. Even before the funeral, the relatives said that they would insist on a second forensic medical examination, because they did not believe in Vadim’s suicide. However, so far these are just words – in the Kalinin Regional Police Department, to which Grechanaya Balka belongs, Gazeta.Ru was told that their relatives did not contact them and did not issue a statement of complaint. “They have a funeral to attend and a hero son to bury, what coherent statements could they make, think for yourself? They are not up to it yet!” A Police spokesman said.
Representatives of the Ministry of Defence were also at the funeral. “Purely human parents can be understood – no one is pleased that their son committed suicide. But there was a medical examination, there are facts, and you can’t argue with them,” Stated a Representative of the Military Department. The parents were completely free to take the body for an independent examination to Krasnodar – even today, even tomorrow. But they themselves set the date of the funeral – not the government. When asked where the bruises on the body came from, the military answered evasively – visiting after the morning after the body had arrived (the body was brought to the farm on Tuesday evening. – “Gazeta.Ru”).
“If this happened nearby, at the Ashuluk Training Ground, for example (the Training Ground is located in the Astrakhan region – Gazeta.Ru), I would show you a photograph from my phone,” the Representative of the Ministry of Defence assures. – But there are no photographs or details yet – they were not sent from Syria. A Gazeta.Ru source in the Ministry of Defence said that Vadim Kostenko ‘Volunteered’ for military service as a type of ‘business’ trip to Syria – in order to earn money for a wedding and a car!
According to the interlocutor, who refers to the testimony of colleagues regarding the deceased soldier – Private Kostenko regularly communicated with his girlfriend on a mobile phone. In total, he had two personal phones. In one of them, the girl was recorded as ‘wife’ (they were not officially married), and om the other as ‘My Tanya.’ “Analysis of SMS messages sent to ‘Wife’ and ‘My Tanya’ showed that the relationship between them was ambiguous: the girl did not show initiative in communication, she answered SMS messages in a sharp, annoyed form,” says the source. Another interlocutor says that it is unequivocally impossible to interpret the true meaning of this correspondence.
According to colleagues, says an interlocutor from the Ministry of Defence, on October 24th, 2015, a Saturday, Kostenko allegedly called the girlfriend on her mobile phone – but she did not want to talk to him – presumably, she was out visiting others, which she told him about.” At the same time, referring to the noise and poor hearing, she interrupted the conversation. After that, he called her several more times, but she did not pick up the phone,” says an informed interlocutor in the military department.
On the same Saturday, when Kostenko allegedly committed suicide, he talked with his parents for half an hour, was cheerful and did not complain about life – relatives of the soldier explained.
At about 4 pm, according to the source, Vadim got behind the wheel of a military UAZ and drove off towards the car park. “In the area where the Radio Engineering Support Company was located – a Special Searchlight Vehicle (UAZ-3962) was found – standing on the side of the road in the direction of the Command-and-Control Tower. The driver of the car was absent,” says a source in the Ministry of Defence.
The body of Private Kostenko was found in the area of an old Fuel and Lubricants Depot (according to Russian law, Gazeta.Ru cannot indicate the method of suicide of a serving soldier – which was reported by a source in the Ministry of Defence).
According to the source, both phones were with him, in the list of recent calls – about ten were to the subscriber ‘wife’ – all of them allegedly remained unanswered.
She told them that Vadim Kostenko did not want to go to Syria.
“He told me that he didn’t really want to go there. And when they were lined up in a Unit at the construction site and they said whoever didn’t want to go, get out of Order, they looked at each other, but no one came out, everyone was afraid that they would be fired,” she said.
Tatyana does not believe in the version of suicide. “He wouldn’t commit suicide because of me. We were going to plan the wedding on his arrival, everything was fine with us. We talked to him on the day of his death. He was in a good mood and said that he would be home soon,” the girl told the radio station.
Sergey Krivenko, a member of the Council for Human Rights under the President of the Russian Federation – has analysed cases of suicide in the Army over the past 1.5 years (from January 2014 to June 2015). There were 22 in total. “Everywhere it is claimed that the Serviceman committed suicide – with such a wording the bodies were given to their parents,” Krivenko tells Gazeta.Ru. – In most cases, parents do not agree with this version and require additional investigation. And in very many cases, as further checks showed, their doubts were justified: as a result, criminal cases were initiated on incitement to suicide or on the facts of murder – later disguised as suicide. Or initially the unfit and mentally unstable were drafted into the Army.
Previously, in the Army they resorted to the noose because of direct violence and non-compliance – there are also many cases of mental violence involving extortion of money.
Of those that we checked, there are a few pure suicides – one guy committed suicide because of a huge debt in civilian life, another was on a criminal case for extortion and beating a colleague, he was supposed to be sent to arbitration the other day. But for most suicides, there are big doubts about the ‘voluntary’ nature of leaving life.”
Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights has already taken the case of the deceased Kostenko under its control – although there has not yet been an appeal from the parents.
The funeral of Vadim Kostenko began in the afternoon. In front of the coffin – which was carried by the military – schoolchildren walked with flowers and wreaths (Vadim’s mother works as a teacher at a local school – Vadim himself was an excellent student. – “Gazeta.Ru”). Many prayer flags were tied to a large funeral cross – and then they were thrown into the grave. Nobody said anything, everyone was crying. Near the monument to those who died in the Great Patriotic War, the coffin was placed on a hearse, in which the driver’s mirrors were hung. The gate to the old cemetery still did not open – as if the churchyard did not want to receive a new young guest. The solemn Guard fired three volleys from their rifles – after which the soldiers quickly collected the shells. A large Russian flag with a double-headed eagle on a flagpole remained at the fresh grave.

Вадима Костенко, первого российского военнослужащего, погибшего в Сирии, похоронили на маленьком сельском кладбище в Краснодарском крае с воинскими почестями. Попрощаться с Вадимом пришли около 300 человек, торжественных речей не произносили, все плакали. По официальной версии, Костенко покончил с собой, на этом основании местный священник отказался его отпевать. В эту же субботу, когда Костенко якобы наложил на себя руки, он полчаса общался с родителями, был веселым, на жизнь не жаловался, рассказывают родственники солдата.
Около четырех часов дня, утверждает источник, Вадим сел за руль военного уазика и уехал в сторону автопарка. «В районе расположения роты радиотехнического обеспечения был обнаружен специальный автомобиль-прожектор марки УАЗ-3962, стоящий на обочине дороги в направлении командно-диспетчерского пункта. Водитель автомобиля отсутствовал», — рассказывает источник в Минобороны.
Тело рядового Костенко обнаружили в районе старого склада ГСМ (согласно российскому законодательству, «Газета.Ru» не может указать способ самоубийства контрактника, о котором сообщил источник в Минобороны).
По словам источника, с ним были оба телефона, в списке последних вызовов — около десяти абоненту «жена», все они якобы остались без ответа.

Всего их было 22. «Везде утверждается, что военнослужащий покончил с собой, с такой формулировкой тела отдавали родителям, — рассказывает Кривенко «Газете.Ru». — В большинстве случаев родители не соглашаются с этой версией и требуют дополнительного расследования. И в очень многих случаях, как показали дальнейшие проверки, их сомнения обоснованы: в итоге возбуждены уголовные дела по доведению до самоубийства или по фактам убийств, замаскированных потом под суицид. Или изначально в армию призвали негодных и психически неустойчивых.
Раньше в армии в петлю лезли из-за прямого насилия и неуставщины, сейчас много случаев вымогательства денег и насилия психического.
Чистых самоубийств из тех, что мы проверили, мало — один парень покончил с собой из-за огромного долга на гражданке, другой проходил по уголовному делу за вымогательство и избиение сослуживца, его на днях должны были отправить в дисбат. Но по большинству суицидов есть большие сомнения в «добровольности» ухода из жизни».
СПЧ уже взял дело погибшего Костенко под свой контроль, хотя обращения со стороны родителей пока не было.
Похороны Вадима Костенко начались во второй половине дня. Перед гробом, который несли военные на руках, шли школьники с цветами и венками (мать Вадима работает в местной школе учительницей, сам Вадим был отличником. — «Газета.Ru»). На большой погребальный крест привязали много полотенец, их потом бросили в могилу. Никто ничего не говорил, все плакали. Возле памятника погибших в Великой Отечественной войне гроб поставили на катафалк, у которого завесили водительские зеркала. Калитка на старенькое кладбище все никак не открывалась — будто погост не хотел принимать нового молодого постояльца. Торжественный караул трижды выстрелил из автоматов, солдаты быстро собрали гильзы. У свежей могилы остался большой российский флаг с двуглавым орлом на флагштоке.
