Claudia Jones was deported to the UK in 1955 (she was imprisoned in the US in 1950 awaiting deportation). In 1948, the British Labour government brought-in sweeping far-left reforms as a reward for the working-class fighting and winning two World Wars during the 20th century. This included giving ALL people born and living in UK colonies “British Citizenship” – although I understand there was “1st”, “2nd”, and “3rd” class designations to distinguish between
(1st) “White” English, Scots, Welsh, and Northern Irish (born in Mainland Great Britain and the United Kingdon
(2nd) “White” British (born in the colonies)
(3rd) “non-White” subjects born in the colonies
Although discontinued today – Passports used to have a single “number” discreetly stamped somewhere within corner. This instructed the Immigration Officials through stream a “Citizen” should be processed. Whereas White British walked right through Immigration Control – non-Whites would be diverted into all kinds of extra checks. Many of the latter category would be placed into Immigration Prison for days on end whilst their applications were processed – and these were people already granted “British Citizenship”. Even today, whereas i can waltz through Gatwick or Stanstead – many a time my Chinese family members have been diverted away – whilst I have been threatened with arrest for trying to stay with them, or complaining about it.
I am reading a book by Carole Boyce Davies entitled “Left of Marx – The Political Life of Black Communist Claudia Jones” (referring not to her ideology – but rather the position of her grave situated to the “left” of Karl Marx at Highgate Cemetery). Jones arrived in the UK in 1955 and was immediately admitted into the NHS to receive care for a heart condition caused by heart treatment in the US. In 1958, Jones was instrumental for founding the pivotal “West Indian Gazette and Afro-Asian Caribbean News” (she was friends with Paul Robeson who raised money for this paper via his music career) – which brought all elements of the “international” Black community together with South and East Asian people – on the grounds that they all suffered from exactly the same anti-foreign racism in the UK. This created the concept of “Political Blackness” which saw even progressive Whites included in the general struggle against racism and imperialism. This is all very different to today – where one of the greatest victories of the Bourgeois State has been to drive a wedge between the different groups and encourage hatred and discrimination. Jones advocated physical and psychological discipline in the face of (local) obstructive and oppressive racism. Progressive should “look beyond” the deficient locality and relate instead to an empowered “Internationalism”. This group power should then be skilfully deployed within the UK to encourage change for the better.
I find it interesting that British (Black) Professor Paul Gilroy, famous for his pivotal book “There Ain’t No Black in the Union Jack” – completely omits the profound influence that Claudia Jones had on the development of Black consciousness – not only in the UK – but across the world. This is typical of the bourgeois academic community – and perhaps to be expected of someone who has infiltrated and made his own way (successfully) in the White world (there are realities of “race” and “racism” that require navigating to avoid exclusion and ostracization). Indeed, even on the far-left, people like Claudia Jones are omitted from the general history and this stems from as yet un recognised and untreated disease of racism that exists on the left. The left lives in a world where it feels it occupies the moral high-ground because the USSR conquered racism. This “conquering” did not spread outside the USSR and the left in the West has no right to associate itself with it. Furthermore, from 1956 onwards, the USSR pursued a subtle but distinct “White” (Russian nationalistic) approach to the spread of Communism – as non-White China was demonised for daring to support Stalin against the lies perpetuated by Khrushchev. Although Claudia Jones did receive medical care in the USSR – and met Mao Zedong in 1964 (twice) – as part of an anti-racist and anti-colonial delegation (despite my extensive personal [family] and professional contacts with Chinese academia on the Mainland – I have not been able to locate any photographs of these meetings).
I think Jones understood that organic China must b known “from the inside” so-to-speak – and must not be “objectified” – from afar or a from a (disjointed) distance. This is why I do not subscribe to this or that self-appointed Western group which claims to possess some kind of “special knowledge” about China – to which we must all subjugate ourselves (like kowtowing to a totem in the desert). No – this is simply another Western game of sublte anti-China racism re-invented as “support”. No self-respecting ethnic Chinese person will be interested (or get involved) with this type of Eurocentric attempt at re-modelling and distinct people. Jones, however, between 1958-1962, through her newspaper, did attempt to “include” Chinese people in the Black diaspora. This is all very different from the tenants of (right-wing) Black Nationalism which now dominates the Black community – particularly in the US – and paints Chinese people as “White-adjacent” whilst fully supporting Black violence against Chinese people. This stupidity distracts the Black people from the fact of White racism and White hegemonic control of society. Disunity is preferred by the White Establishment to a unity that could lead to Socialist reform.
Finally, Claudia Jones did not “invent” the Notting Hill Carnival as some Trotskyite outlets claim – but she did permit her newspaper to advertise and support it – providing it remained a positive vehicle for demonstrating the “beauty” of the disparate cultures of the world that lay (or laid) within the British Empire (there was a group of Black and White individuals behind the Carnival). The idea was that the fears of the White working-class that rioted in Nottinghill in 1958 in protest to mass immigration (the Tory governments of the day [Churchill] placed large numbers of migrants from the British Empire in the middle of working-class areas [away from the middle-class] without any preparation or support – thinking “nothing would happen”) – might be allayed if it was proven that “differences” in culture could be proven to be a) positive, and b) inspiring for all concerned. Initially, the “Carnival” was held in a church hall – so well organised and disciplined was the event (police were not present or required). Remember, Jones, and people like Jones, instigated a Socialist discipline throughout the Black community which regulated everything it then did when interfacing with the White community. With the demise of the influence of Socialism throughout the Black community (and beyond) – this discipline no longer holds true and the “Carnival” has become a “free for all” celebration of a divisive hedonism. It is not “culture” that is celebrated – but “decadence”. The Met Police issued the following data regarding the Notting Hill Carnival (2026):
‘The total number of arrests as part of the Notting Hill Carnival policing operation this year has been confirmed as 636.
242 arrests took place on Sunday and 394 on Monday.
193 arrests took place on the approaches to the event, with the remainder taking place within the event footprint.
Offences included possession and supply of drugs, assaults (including assaults on emergency workers), possession of weapons, sexual offences and public order offences.
The use of live facial recognition technology was expanded this year, leading to 214 alerts, 121 arrests and 86 registered sex offenders being stopped and spoken to. Seven registered sex offenders were found to be breaching their conditions or notification requirements and were arrested.
Stop and search was used extensively as part of the proactive policing approach. It resulted in 68 weapons, including a handgun, being found.’
If Claudia Jones could see these atrocious results – I am sure she would be utterly astonished at the state and behaviour of the Black community. Furthermore, Jones might be even more shocked to see the White Press placating this behaviour and describing these results as “positive”! What we are seeing here is the application of bourgeois (individualistic) liberalism – the preferred vehicle within which free market capitalism operates. This is what happens when there is a lack of proper Socialist discipline. The next logical step is that Black individualism is “too shocking” for White sensitivities – and the Carnival should be banned or discontinued. At this juncture – “banning” it might well be in the public interest – all things consider. ACW (3.9.2026)
Caudia Jones, the National Secretary of the Communist Party’s Women’s Commission, was deported yesterday by Officer Joseph Mack, who was leading the Deportation Hearings at the Immigration and Naturalization Service – Columbus Avenue. Miss Jones was deemed deportable under the National Security Act of 1950 as a foreigner who had joined the Communist Party USA. She was born in Trinidad, British West Indies, in 1924 and, as a British citizen, came to this country. Paul Crouch, a freelance writer, (and his wife – Sylvia), who had previously called themselves Communists, testified in favour of the US government, saying they knew Ms. Jones to be a “Communist Party Official” who held several positions between 1935 and 1936. and again in 1941. Mr. Crouch identified the defendant in the courtroom and said he had met her “dozens of times” in closed meetings of Communist leaders. They knew Ms. Jones as Director of Education and a member of the National Council of the Communist Youth League, as well as a member of the Commission on the Negro (section of the) Party, which developed policy for “Negro Communists” in the United States.
Affidavit for Alien Registration
In the minutes of the hearings, a registration “Declaration of a Foreigner” dated December 24, 1940, was recorded, in which Miss Jones stated that she had been a member of the Communist Party since 1936. At yesterday’s hearing, Ms. Jones and her lawyers, Mrs. Carole King and Isidore Engler, refused to answer questions or participate in the hearings, limiting themselves to their presence. Mr. Mack repeatedly demanded that the record should state: “The defendant remains silent.” Mr Englander, who joined the case yesterday as an Assistant Counsel, said he had not been provided with a transcript of previous hearings and asked Ms. Jones not to answer questions from participants in the hearing or investigators “not with a word, not the slightest movement”. The defense refused to present evidence in their favour or to question prosecution witnesses, although Mr. Mack said that Mrs. King was given a break on November 28 to prepare for cross-examination. Before announcing his decision – Mr. Mack asked Miss Jones which country she would like to go to if she was deported. She did not answer. The judge ruled that the accusations that she was a “foreigner” who taught and advocated for the overthrow of the United States government, which led to her arrest in 1948, were unfounded.
Additional fee supported
An additional charge under the McCarran National Security Act was upheld. The latest accusation, made last month, was that she was a “foreigner” and a “member of the Communist Party” living on US soil. Mrs. King asked to be given thirty days to review the case file before filing objections, saying that “it is possible that this case will go to the Supreme Court and be reviewed for the Constitutionality of the McCarran Act.” Mr. Mack gave her five days after receiving the case file. According to Immigration Officials, Ms. Jones will remain at large on $1,000 bail pending a Final Decision on her case.
Yesterday, at the second Deportation Hearing, the government concluded the case against Betty Gannett Tormey, a 44-year-old Polish citizen, by providing a copy of last Tuesday’s newspaper The Daily Worker, which called her “Director of Education in the Communist Party.” Judge Warren A. Mueller denied the defense’s motions to dismiss the case and said he would prepare a written summary.
