If you watch, read, or listen, to Terry Nation’s “Survivors” (1975) – you will see civilisation suddenly collapse due to a type of flu that is spread around the world via jet-liners (international travelling being a relatively new phenomena for the masses at the time). The USSR existed then and the US was engaged in a “Cold War” with it at the time (it turns out that illnesses are no respecter of political ideology). The US laughably believed that the Soviets possessed a “weather-altering machine” and would use it to usher-in a new ice-age. To this end, the US government ordered the British government (something of a US lap-dog at the time) to put-out the false propaganda that an “ice-age” was coming! The BBC made disinforming series about this whilst academics happily conformed despite all the data denying this assertion. This was the fake climate change argument of the day – and individuals lost their career when denying it.
In 1973, the Soviets had given the Palestinians state of the art surface-to-air missile designed to shoot-down the latest US fighter-bomber aircraft. During to so-called “Yom Kippur War” – the Zionists predictably launched their airforce to inflict casualties on the unarmed population of the Palestinians – but on this day things went very differently. the Israeli Airforce (a branch of the US Airforce) was destroyed in twenty minutes. The Soviet missiles took away the Zionist air supremacy for the first (and only time) during the ongoing conflict. The Arabs and Persians then launched a combined ground offensive which pitched various older grades of Soviet tank armour against the most advanced US tank armour available to the Zionists.
Older Soviet long and short (personal) fire-arms were levelled against the most advanced US equivalents. Older Soviet artillary confronted the latest US artillary used by the Zionists. The Arabs and Persians had the numbers – but the Israelis possessed the fire-power. On paper, a Soviet General could probably predict that if the Zionists used their technological weaponry effectively – then regardless of the individual bravery of the opposition – the Palestinian side was destined to fail. And fail it did. Thousands of bodies were strewn across the deserts – often mangled within destroyed Soviet weaponry. The Zionists advanced without an airforce and inflicted a terrible military defeat on the Arabs and Persians. The Palestinian side then inflicted a highly effective oil embargo upon the West – which caused havoc for years afterwards (reducing the US speed limit to a mere 55 mph).
The collective West, confronted on the one-hand by the US lies of an upcoming ice-age – and a lack of fuel (particularly in the winter) – all added to a sense of immanent danger. The oil shortage forced the US to bring their Zionist attack dogs to heel. Israeli restraint was rewarded with barrels of oil. For a time, however, many believed that the world was on the brink of collapse through many different pathways – not just nuclear. This was when Terry Nation penned his excellent “Survivors” series which was broadcast on the BBC during 1975. It his an instant nerve and gave vent to the zeitgeist that defined the time. The Judeo-Christian State collapse – this foreign Jewish construct (stolen from the Babylonians) that forced Celts to abandon their Pagan beliefs and stop worshipping the cycles of nature.
Those who survived the pandemic resorted to a (voluntary) communal form of living with no external law, no law enforcement, or judicial punishment. Actions were taken that were applicable to the circumstances at hand – a Celtic attribute that regulates life. Those dying of cancer – with no access to modern medicine or pain-killers – would ask to be put out of their misery – usually through a pillow over the face. No arrests, no inquests, and no guilt. As society desperately needed young people (a high percentage had died during the pandemic) – there was no age of consent – or formal marriages. Relationships developed according to nature and not some external measurement of (abstractive) moral purity. Everyone was armed – or knew someone who was – as each independent group quite often had to defend itself from the activities of other groups, with the fights usually being over who controlled what was left of the dwindling resources (all production had ceased).
There was no capitalism or liberal democracy – and groups “bartered” with one another once peaceful relationship had been established (leaders rose quite naturally – and followers obeyed). An ageing population required the vigour of youth to take over the arduous business of farming and harvesting, etc. There was no place for an objective or abstractive “god” – as such a concept was clearly linked to an established (and interferring) State – which most survivors had no wish to see re-established despite all the advantages such an institution provided. The UK had been invaded by numerous alien forces – whilst the illness in Survivors allowed the British to recover their (free) Pagan identity. Terry Nation’s series was written long before the Covid-19 pandemic – this is true of the TV re-boot (2008-2010) and the various re-imaginings (2016) that have occured in book form. Terry Nation, of course, wrote for Dr Who and created Blake’s 7.
