Author’s Note: I am blessed to have been born a free Englishman. British academics are the best in the world when not under duress from oppressive governments. I have piles of English books written fairly about the Confederacy – a movement I believe would have led to a “Socialist” North America if it ha prevailed. Just look at how the Maryland Guard dressed like the British Grenadiers or Coldstream Guards! How magnificent they look! The CSA would now be supplying the Comrade-State of Cuba (instead of killing it through sanctions), rewarding a Socialist Cina, Vietnam, Laos, Venezuela and Iran – whilst blockading what is left of the Federal States for their greed and belligerence toward Socialist States. The Native Americans would have their own Independent country in what is now the Western United States – free of Eurocentric interference – whilst the State of Israel would be in a remote area of Brazil with “Zionism” being outlawed as a form of Jewish-derived “White Supremacy” (see the 1975 UN Resolution) and the subsequent ICC and ICJ Declamations regarding the Zionist Genocide in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. South Africa would be rewarded for holding Israel accountable for its Crimes Against Humanity and Trotskyism (as a right-wing attack on Marxist-Leninism) would be an imprisonable deviation. Thank you to the Confederate soldiers who gave their lives in pursuit of a higher freedom! ACW (19.5.2026)
After the Union invasion of the South was defeated and repulsed during 1861-1862 – General Lee took-over the Command of the Army of Northern Virginia and immediately went on the attack into Northern territory (effectively chasing a defeated and demoralised Union force). From the accounts of Confederate soldiers and officers I have read, it is obvious that a great many people in Maryland agreed with the Confederacy and wanted to secede from the Union. Indeed, when the Confederate Army crossed into Maryland (in the Eastern Theatre) thousands upon thousands of men, women, and children came out onto the streets to greet their liberators. This was yet another magnificent military manoeuvre planned and carried-out by General Robert E Lee with many other confident and able Officers and Private soldiers at his disposal.
The Confederacy occupied Maryland between September 4th – September 20 1862 – and it was a remarkable success considering all the problems and limitations the Confederacy faced. Although some Confederate Units wore beautiful and new grey unions, hats, and boots, whilst carrying the latest (often British) weaponry and accruements, many others went bare-foot, ate every other day (if at all), and possessed poor quality – or no weaponry at all. What the average Confederate soldier did possess was discipline, good tactical training, and a willingness to fight and die for the freedom of their individual States (considered countries in their own right). General Lee understood that due to a lack of material resources (including a static population) – the Confederacy could not afford a war of attrition. The Confederacy had to fight a war premised upon superior manoeuvrability and not stationary stubbornness.
Through the bravery of it soldiers (and the cleverness of its leaders – Jefferson Davis’ family was originally from Wales – and was one of the best Presidents America ever produced), the Confederacy strove to compel England and France to a) officially recognise the Confederacy, and b) send troops and resources en masse to support it. This is what terrified Lincoln – as he knew the North could not prevail over 100,000 English Red Coats and kilted Scotsmen descending Southward out of Canada – as the British working-class is as tough as nails. The Union forces in and around Sharpsburg were initially cleared away by the invading Confederate forces – who captured thousands of prisoners together with large supplies of food, clothing, weaponry, and ammunition (including fresh and healthy horses). Local citizens raised Confederate flags (often secretly home-made) and lavished the impoverished Confederate soldiers with affection and supplies.
When Lincoln sent in fresh Union soldiers (mainly European migrants arriving on the boats docking regularly in New York harbour) – the Confederate Army (White farm-boys, older men, drummer-boys, Black volunteers, Chinese, Native-American, Creole, and mixed-race – including a sprinkling of young women) was slowly pushed back until it became clear that the land taken could not be held without suffering substantial losses. Therefore, a planned retreat back into the South was co-ordinated. Meanwhile, the local aristocracy (and well to do) even arranged a Celebratory Ball in Sharpsburg which was interrupted by the Confederates having to fight a defensive battle half-way through the night. The ball continued a few hours later after the victory was won. Meanwhile, Lincoln authorised a reign of terror upon the citizenry of Maryland – authorising mass arrests, imprisonments, exile, and even executions – for anyone proven to have welcomes, greeted, or assisted the Confedrates in anyway.
Of course, there were Maryland citizens who were opposed to the Confederacy, but it would seem incorrect to assume they were in the majority (the cause of Secession would have won in a Referendum). As the Confederacy withdrew out of Maryland – the Union punishment began. Lincoln made it clear that draconian measures would be taken against any US citizen who chose to exercise their freedom of choice and favour the Confederacy. The women of Maryland require a special mention. They sowed Confederate flags, they made and distributed food, they made and distributed clothing to the Confederate soldiers, and when the Confederate wounded started to flow into Sharpsburg on horse and cart – the women and girls of Maryland became “nurses” (referred to as “Angels” by Confederate soldiers). Thousands of Maryland men joined the Confederate ranks and assisted in the great Confederate victory at Antietam (Sharpsburg) fought on September 17th 1862. Union losses amount to 12,410 in total (2,108 killed, 9,549 wounded and 753 captured/missing). Confederate losses totalled 10,316 total (1,546 killed, 7,752 wounded; 1,018 captured/missing) according to reliable sources. The wounded to killed ratio was very high leaving many men, boys, and some women with life-long disabilities. The Confederacy bloodied the nose of the Union and even defeated its best troops – but lacked the material resources to hold ground taken if the indigenous people would not entirely rise-up and expel Union Authority completely.
