Translator’s Note: If you study the history of the spread of Buddhism – the name of “Samarkand” appears quite often on the pathway between India and China (where monastics and devout lay-people often walked thousands of miles – in both directions – in-search of the genuine Buddhist scriptures). I had know idea historical Samarkand is now situated in the modern Nation State of Uzbekistan (a former Soviet Republic) an Islamic country. When the US and UK invaded Revolutionary Russia between 1918-1921 – the (58,000) British Army tended to manoeuvre around this general geographical area (the British committed an atrocity in Baku – Azerbaijan – by murdering unarmed Soviet POWs). So ashamed was the British Nation after this shameful event – no regiment in the British Army claim these actions as “battle honours”. The US tried to extend WWI to happening between 1914-1921 (these dates actually appear on some plaques) – but Great Britain refused this designation and limited WWI to “1914-1918” (although occasionally a plaque will read “1914-1919”) when the Soviet Red Army prevailed (the formation of the USSR was established in late 1922). Chess federation decides to express solidarity with Palestine, adhere to government’s policy

Pakistan has boycotted the match against Israel in the ongoing Samarkand Olympiad 2026 in Uzbekistan.
According to media reports and available details, Pakistan and Israel were scheduled to face off in the first round of the event today, but the national chess team avoided playing against Israeli players under the government’s policy.
Zeeshan Ali Naqvi, president of the Chess Federation of Pakistan, has taken the stand that Pakistan has a clear and unwavering policy on the issue of Israel, and contrary to the country’s policy, a match cannot be played with Israel. He further clarified that the purpose of not participating in the match against Israel is to express full solidarity with the Palestinian people.
It should be noted that teams from 203 countries from all over the world are participating in this global chess event held in Uzbekistan.

ازبکستان میں جاری اولمپیاڈ سمرقند 2026 میں پاکستان نے اسرائیل کے خلاف شیڈول میچ کا بائیکاٹ کر دیا ہے۔
میڈیا رپورٹس اور دستیاب تفصیلات کے مطابق ایونٹ کے پہلے راؤنڈ میں پاکستان اور اسرائیل کا مقابلہ آج ہونا تھا، تاہم قومی شطرنج ٹیم نے حکومتی پالیسی کے تحت اسرائیلی کھلاڑیوں کے خلاف میدان میں اترنے سے گریز کیا۔
صدر چیس فیڈریشن آف پاکستان ذیشان علی نقوی نے اس حوالے سے مؤقف اختیار کیا ہے کہ پاکستان کی اسرائیل کے معاملے پر ایک واضح اور غیر متزلزل پالیسی موجود ہے، اور ملک کی پالیسی کے برخلاف اسرائیل کے ساتھ میچ نہیں کھیلا جا سکتا۔ انہوں نے مزید واضح کیا کہ اسرائیل کے خلاف میچ میں شرکت نہ کرنے کا مقصد فلسطین کے عوام کے ساتھ مکمل اظہار یکجہتی کرنا ہے۔
واضح رہے کہ ازبکستان میں منعقد ہونے والے اس عالمی شطرنج ایونٹ میں دنیا بھر سے 203 ممالک کی ٹیمیں شرکت کر رہی ہیں۔
