Arab League condemns systematic torture, repression, and mistreatment of Gaza prisoners

CAIRO, November 1, 2026 (WAFA) – The Arab League has expressed its strong condemnation and denunciation of the human rights violations and systematic, recurring acts of repression faced by prisoners from the Gaza Strip held in the “Rakafet” wing of Ramla Prison—actions that have resulted in injuries and burns among several of the detainees.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the General Secretariat warned of the gravity of these practices, describing them as a blatant violation of international humanitarian law—specifically the four 1949 Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols—as well as the Convention against Torture and the basic principles for the treatment of prisoners.

The Arab League further asserted that such acts constitute crimes against humanity that necessitate accountability. It called for an immediate end to all repressive practices and mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners, demanding that they be treated in accordance with international human rights standards and international humanitarian law.

It also urged that the International Committee of the Red Cross and independent oversight bodies be granted unrestricted access to Ramla Prison and the “Rakafet” wing to document conditions and provide necessary medical care to the injured.

Furthermore, it called for an independent and transparent international investigation into these violations, the prosecution of those responsible, the immediate release of sick and wounded prisoners, and the cessation of all forms of arbitrary detention.

The Arab League reaffirmed the centrality of the Palestinian cause to joint Arab action, as well as its full solidarity with Palestinian prisoners and their families.

It further called upon the international community, the Human Rights Council, and the United Nations General Assembly to fulfill their responsibilities in protecting Palestinian civilians and prisoners, and to put an end to the policy of impunity.

CAIRO, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) — The Arab League on Sunday called for an independent international investigation into alleged torture and systematic abuses against Palestinian prisoners from the Gaza Strip held at Israel’s Ramla Prison.

In a statement, the organization said several detainees in the prison’s Rakevet section had suffered injuries and burns due to repeated acts of repression and mistreatment.

It called for the International Committee of the Red Cross and independent monitoring bodies to be granted unrestricted access to the prison, and demanded medical care for injured detainees and the immediate release of sick and wounded prisoners.

The Arab League said the alleged abuses violated international humanitarian law and constituted “crimes against humanity” requiring accountability.

It urged the international community and UN bodies to take action to protect Palestinian prisoners and end impunity.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office reported on Tuesday that Gaza detainees in the Rakevet section had been subjected to repeated assaults, including beatings with batons, tear gas and pepper spray, rubber bullets and stun grenades.

According to another report by the office published on Oct. 24, between 9,350 and 9,400 Palestinian prisoners and detainees were held in Israeli jails as of October 2026.
