Havana, Jul 22 (ACN) With a call to the defense of Public Health, humanism and internationalist vocation, the University of Medical Sciences of Havana (UCMLH) today celebrated the graduation ceremony of almost two thousand new professionals, which paid tribute to the centenary of the birth of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.
The Karl Marx Theatre hosted the ceremony, headed by Rolando Ernesto Yero Travieso, head of the Department of Attention to the Social Sector of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba; José Angel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health, and other high authorities of the sector, as well as representatives of the University Student Federation and the Union of Young Communists.
In her main speech, Yoandra Muro Valle, rector of the UCMLH, reported that among the graduates are 1,160 doctors, 82 stomatologists, 291 graduates in eight careers in Health Technologies, and 166 graduates of other training programs, including courses by meetings and short cycles.
Today we have the privilege of graduating in this scenario one thousand 899 professionals who have demonstrated the ability to respond to the needs of the new times, said Muro Valle, who highlighted the active participation of students in the confrontation with COVID-19, in volunteer work tasks, in community interventions and in the defense of sovereignty.
The rector stressed that the ceremony acquires a special meaning as it coincides with the centenary of Fidel Castro, and recalled the first graduation of doctors of the Revolution, which occurred on November 14, 1965 in Pico Turquino, where 400 doctors and 26 stomatologists received their degrees in the midst of the harsh conditions of the Sierra Maestra. surrounded by the affection and humility of the people.
On behalf of the students of other nationalities, Asaph Amad, from Guyana, Best Graduate of the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) project, reviewed that they arrived in a land without knowing anyone, and most of them did not even speak the language; but with the help of our teachers we managed to learn Spanish from the alphabet, he said.
Amad evoked the personal sacrifices: leaving behind families and friends, as well as the hard stage of the pandemic, the quarantine and the flight crisis that kept them incommunicado.
However, he stressed that each absence had a purpose and each sleepless night in front of the books was one more brick in that shared dream.
He thanked the professors and staff of ELAM for their unconditional support, and highlighted the unique opportunity to train in a system that allows practicing medicine from an early stage.
All the difficulties have forced us to be resistant, strong and with a great capacity for adaptation, which allows us to practice as doctors almost anywhere in the world, he said.
Amad closed his speech with a message of gratitude to Commander Fidel Castro, the Revolution and the Cuban people, and recalled that foreign graduates take “two homes and two families”: the one built in Cuba and the one that awaits them in their countries.
Among the special recognitions, the ceremony distinguished Yariadna Rodríguez Pereira, from the Julio Trigo Faculty of Medical Sciences, as the Best Graduate in the sphere of Culture.
Alejandra de la Cruz Moreno, Best Graduate of the Medicine career and Best Comprehensive Graduate of the UCMLH, defined the title received as an honour that involves saving lives, relieving pain and transforming tears into hope, represents uniting science and art, leaving traces in the hearts of patients and bringing smiles in the midst of difficulties.
He then read the oath that commits them to professional ethics, respect for the dignity of people, the defense of the National Health System, internationalism and science at the service of life.
The plenary responded with a round of applause and the emotion was reflected on the faces of the new professionals and their families.
During the ceremony, the 56 students who made up the Mario Muñoz Monroy Vanguard Movement on its XX Anniversary were also honoured, as well as the winners of the Scientific Merit Award.
Rector Muro Valle reported that among the graduates there are representatives from 73 countries, with a greater presence from Colombia, Ghana, Palestine and Jamaica, of them, 389 are from the Latin American School of Medicine and 193 from other training projects.
May their human, supportive and empathetic vocation be championed in the country of the white coats, said the rector in her closing, and added: “make way for your future, fight every day, every second of your life; that is the best message of love and trust.”

La Habana, 22 jul (ACN) Con un llamado a la defensa de la Salud Pública, el humanismo y la vocación internacionalista, la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de La Habana (UCMLH) celebró hoy el acto de graduación de casi dos mil nuevos profesionales, que rindió homenaje al centenario del natalicio del Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz.
El Teatro Karl Marx acogió la ceremonia, encabezada por Rolando Ernesto Yero Travieso, jefe del Departamento de Atención al Sector Social del Comité Central del Partido Comunista de Cuba; José Angel Portal Miranda, ministro de Salud Pública, y otras altas autoridades del sector, así como representantes de la Federación Estudiantil Universitaria y de la Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas.
En su discurso central, Yoandra Muro Valle, rectora de la UCMLH, informó que entre los graduados figuran mil 160 médicos, 82 estomatólogos, 291 licenciados en ocho carreras de Tecnologías de la Salud, y 166 egresados de otros programas de formación, incluyendo cursos por encuentros y ciclos cortos.
Hoy tenemos el privilegio de graduar en este escenario a mil 899 profesionales que han demostrado capacidad para responder a las necesidades de los nuevos tiempos, afirmó Muro Valle, quien destacó la participación activa de los estudiantes en el enfrentamiento a la COVID-19, en tareas de trabajo voluntario, en intervenciones comunitarias y en la defensa de la soberanía.
La rectora subrayó que la ceremonia adquiere un significado especial al coincidir con el centenario de Fidel Castro, y recordó la primera graduación de médicos de la Revolución, ocurrida el 14 de noviembre de 1965 en el Pico Turquino, donde 400 médicos y 26 estomatólogos recibieron sus títulos en medio de las duras condiciones de la Sierra Maestra, rodeados del cariño y la humildad del pueblo.
En representación de los estudiantes de otras nacionalidades, Asaph Amad, de Guyana, Mejor Graduado del proyecto Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina (ELAM), repasó que llegaron a una tierra sin conocer a nadie, y la mayoría ni siquiera hablar el idioma; pero con la ayuda de nuestros profesores logramos aprender español desde el abecedario, relató.
Amad evocó los sacrificios personales: dejar atrás familias y amigos, así como la dura etapa de la pandemia, la cuarentena y la crisis de los vuelos que los mantuvo incomunicados.
Sin embargo, subrayó que cada ausencia tuvo propósito y cada desvelo frente a los libros fue un ladrillo más en ese sueño compartido.
Agradeció a los profesores y al personal de la ELAM por su apoyo incondicional, y destacó la oportunidad única de formarse en un sistema que permite practicar la medicina desde etapas tempranas.
Todas las dificultades nos han forzado a ser resistentes, fuertes y con gran capacidad de adaptación, eso nos permite ejercer como médicos en casi cualquier parte del mundo, afirmó.
Amad cerró su intervención con un mensaje de gratitud al Comandante Fidel Castro, a la Revolución y al pueblo cubano, y recordó que los graduados extranjeros se llevan “dos hogares y dos familias”: la construida en Cuba y la que los espera en sus países.
Entre los reconocimientos especiales, la ceremonia distinguió a Yariadna Rodríguez Pereira, de la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas Julio Trigo, como Mejor Graduada en la esfera de Cultura.
Alejandra de la Cruz Moreno, Mejor Graduada de la carrera de Medicina y Mejor Graduada Integral de la UCMLH, definió el título recibido como un honor que implica salvar vidas, aliviar el dolor y transformar lágrimas en esperanza, representa unir ciencia y arte, dejar huellas en el corazón de los pacientes y sacar sonrisas en medio de las dificultades.
Acto seguido, leyó el juramento que los compromete con la ética profesional, el respeto a la dignidad de las personas, la defensa del Sistema Nacional de Salud, el internacionalismo y la ciencia al servicio de la vida.
El plenario respondió con un cerrado aplauso y la emoción se reflejó en los rostros de los nuevos profesionales y sus familias.
Durante la ceremonia también se homenajeó a los 56 estudiantes que integraron el Movimiento de Vanguardia Mario Muñoz Monroy en su XX Aniversario, así como a los galardonados con el Premio al Mérito Científico.
La rectora Muro Valle informó que entre los graduados hay representantes de 73 países, con mayor presencia de Colombia, Ghana, Palestina y Jamaica, de ellos, 389 son de la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina y 193 de otros proyectos de formación.
Que su vocación humana, solidaria y empática sean abanderadas en el país de las batas blancas, expresó la rectora en su cierre, y añadió: “hagan paso a su futuro, luchen cada día, cada segundo de su vida; ese es el mejor mensaje de amor y de confianza”.
