China: Trump’s Announcement to Withdraw from UNESCO Not Responsible! (25.7.2025)

Blogger’s Note: After the death of Roosevelt and the election of the right-wing Christian “Truman” post-WWII – overt US agitation against the “Internationalist” principles of the United Nations (UN) began with a vengeance on the grounds that “Internationalism” was a key ideological demand of the Soviet Socialist System. As the primary armed force which took-on, confronted, and then defeated Nazi Germany (and its allies) during WWII – the USSR had a substantial philosophical input in the post-WWII world order. At least for a few years after 1945 – before the US realised the true extent of the political power its deployed army throughout the world granted the White House.

With the flexing of its new-found muscles, the US government encouraged popular protests amongst its citizens against the UN on the streets of America. Indeed, the US right-wing and far-right has made a political point about opposing the UN – suggesting the UN is establishment of Communism via the backdoor. To this end, the US has withdrawn three-times from UNESCO:

1) 1984 – President Raegan – ‘hostility toward the basic institutions of a free society.’

(The US re-joined UNESCO in 2003 under President George Bush Jr)

2) 2017 – President Trump (I) – pressure from Israel (false allegations of anti-Semitism)

The United States under Obama opposed UNESCO when it granted Palestine full membership in 2011, despite opposition from its ally Israel. This resulted at the time in the US and Israel halting their contributions to the agency. in 2017 – the US and Israel both withdrew from UNESCO.

(The US re-joined UNESCO in 2023 under President Joe Biden)

3) 2026 – President Trump (II) –  “a globalist, ideological agenda for international development at odds with our America First foreign policy” and “anti-Israel rhetoric”.

A membership country must give at least one-year’s notice before withdrawing from UNESCO – the latest US withdrawal will take place on December 31st, 2026. As the US has not financially contributed for years (whilst still beneftiing from UNESCO activity) – its presence will not be a great loss.

UNESCO has grown enormously since its founding in 1946, but the above are not the only times the US has protested against the UN’s operating ethos. In 1977, during the Carter Administration, the United States withdrew from the UN International Labour Organization because it was “too politicized” – but re-joined in 1980 after reforms were carried out. President Carter diplomatically recognised Socialist China (downgrading Taiwan to the island it is) in 1979 – whilst simultaneously giving the green-light to a CIA Operation developing the Islamo-fascist Mujahadeen in Afghanistan as a means to overthrow the democratically elected Socialist government of Afghanistan (a US financed and armed terrorist force eulogised in the movie Rambo III). Hillary Clinton, of course, had lots of positive things to say about the Mujahadeen – which would morph into the Taliban and Al Qaeda – and eventually carry-out the 911 New York Terrorist Attacks. As you can see, President Carter’s antics represent something of a mixed bag. ACW (25.7.2025)

(ECNS) — China on Wednesday commented on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement to withdraw from UNESCO as “not what a responsible major country should do.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks at a regular press conference on Wednesday.

“We noted that UNESCO and multiple countries expressed their regrets over the U.S. decision to withdraw from the organization again. It’s the third time that the U.S. has withdrawn from UNESCO. The country hasn’t paid arrears for a long time,” he said.

The purpose of UNESCO is to advance international cooperation in education, science and culture, promote the mutual understanding and integration of civilizations, uphold world peace, and achieve common development. China firmly supports UNESCO’s work, he added.

According to the spokesperson, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the U.N., China calls on all countries to reaffirm their commitment to multilateralism, and take concrete action to support the UN-centred international system, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
