Translator’s Note: Within traditional martial arts training in Asia, even when practiced in the West, it is normal for women to spar with men – as this is logical. This is an ancient training method. Women and girls must learn what it is like to fight with a man. Women, by encountering the natural strength of a male must develop different skills to get around (and negate) the advantages that men possess. Women tend to be quick, clever, and light on their feet. Being kicked and punched toughens their mind and body in the training hall – so that if they are attacked on the street they might well survive and prevail against their attacker. In Old China, particularly amongst the Hakka people, men and women formed huge medieval armies that fought on the battlefield using ancient weaponry! Women fought and died alongside men – and that was just the way things were. In modern armies, women train with the men and go to war against men – women are capable fighters. It is anti-intellectual to assume that a woman will be killed or badly hurt in the ring if she happens to spar with a male. I know for a fact that female boxers routinely spar with male opponents whilst preparing for important fights with other women – as this conditioning develops extra strength and endurance! The idea that women should not fight is sexist and just another example of far-right misogyny! ACW (17.8.2024)
In the past two days, female boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-Ting particpating in the 2024 Paris Olympic Boxing Arena have become the focus of public opinion because they supposedly “look like men”! This is the myth the Western (and Russian) media has been perpetuating – a form of racism disguised as Trans-Phobia!
The 25-year-old Algerian athlete Khelif defeated Italy’s Carini to enter the Women’s 66kg Quarter-Finals (Carini withdrew from her fight with Khelif after just 46 seconds – claiming it was to “save his life”! The scene of her kneeling on the boxing ring and crying – made netizens feel sympathy for her supposed plight) – while Lin Yu-Ting defeated Uzbekistan’s Turdibekova – to enter the Women’s 57kg Top Eight.
Despite being long-established female boxers – their participation in the Olympics has caused controversy as they were disqualified from participating in 2023. After her match with Khelif in 2024, a tearful Carini said she withdrew from the fight because of the pain in her nose – after she was punched and roughed-up in the opening round.
“I felt a sharp pain in my nose and with the maturity of a boxer, I said ‘enough’ because I didn’t want to suffer unnecessary damage, I couldn’t finish the fight.”
This should have been the end of the matter – but it was not. Khelif was subsequently heavily attacked online. Prominent anti-trans figures, right-wing commentators and politicians have falsely referred to Khelif as a man – and used the controversy to fuel a wider culture war over gender identity. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meroni said: “It is important to be able to compete on an equal footing, but in my opinion this is not a fair competition.” Writer JK Rowling said on social media: “Watch this and then explain why it is acceptable for men to beat women in public for fun?” These remarks further intensified netizens’ attacks on Khelif.
Simultaneously, 28-year-old boxer Lin Yu-Ting has also faced gender controversy. As she advanced to the Quarterfinals – Kamenova – of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee issued a statement of protest. What gender were these two women at birth? Well, both of these women were obviously born “female” – they were born as “girls”. Both women have been competing in Women’s Boxing and are recognised as female athletes by the International Olympic Committee. Indeed, due to the controversy, the family of Khelif have provided photographic and documentary evidence proving that their daughter is a woman, has always been a woman, and was born a girl.

IOC spokesman Adams also said, “The Algerian boxer was born a woman, is registered as a woman, lives her life as a woman, participates in boxing matches as a woman, and holds a female passport.” “This is not a transgender case. There is a misconception that this is a fight between men and women. It is not. There is a consensus that from a scientific point of view, this is not a fight between men and women.” The problem is that the mainstrean media in the W4st (and Russia) has been assisting the far-right (racist) ideologues – by spreading racially charged language, disinformation, misogyny, and intense transphobia. What these propagandarists do not know or care about is that In Khelif’s native Algeria, it is illegal to be gay or transgender – a crime that could be punishable by death.
In the face of doubts and ridicule, Khelif remained extremely strong. “Don’t let obstacles stand in your way, resist any obstacles and overcome them!” she said in March 2024. “My dream is to win a gold medal!” “If I win, my parents will see how far their child has gone – despite all the hardships and sacrifices. I especially want to inspire disadvantaged girls and children in Algeria.” Khelif is a truly strong woman who has proven her mettle throughout this vacuous international attack.
Lin Yu-Ting has also been participating in Women’s Competitions and has also been recognized as a female athlete by the International Olympic Committee. Why have these two women been subjected to this racist and sexist attack? Much of the criticism stems from Khelif’s disqualification from the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi, India – a competition where Lin Yu-Ting was also stripped of her Bronze Medal.
The IBA (International Boxing Association) defines a woman as an “individual with XX chromosomes” and a men as an “individual with XY chromosomes” – and claims that XY chromosomes were found in both athletes (Khelif and Lin). The problem is that the IBA refuses to provide any convincing scientific evidence – on the spurious grounds of “confidentiality”. But the IOC said in a statement on Thursday that Khelif and Lin were “victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA.” “They were disqualified abruptly and without due process at the end of the 2023 IBA World Championships,” the IOC said.
Both of these “female” athletes participated in the last Olympics – so why was there no controversy at that time?
Unlike previous Olympic Games, the Boxing Event at the Tokyo Olympics was organized by the International Olympic Committee – rather than the IBA. The International Olympic Committee suspended the Organization’s activities in 2019 – due to concerns about the IBA’s fruadulent finances, poor governance, deficient ethics, corrupt judging and deficient adjudication. The IBA was stripped of its status as the Sport’s World Governing Body in 2023 – after failing to meet reform demands from the International Olympic Committee. In 2021, the International Olympic Committee released a framework for “Equity, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination Based on Gender Identity and Gender Difference”. The document lists Ten Principles (not rules) that National Bodies should follow when selecting athletes for the Olympics. The IOC said it “supports the participation of any athlete who meets the Olympic Qualification Criteria set by the International Sports Federations. The IOC does not discriminate against athletes who qualify through an International Sports Federation on the basis of gender identity or sex characteristics.”
Is this a transgender debate?
Absolutely not.

There is no indication that either Khelif nor Lin are transgender. Some reports have speculated that boxers may have differences regarding sex development (DSD) – like runner Caster Semenya – based on the IBA’s claim that they have XY chromosomes. DSDs are a group of rare disorders in which a person’s hormones, genes or reproductive organs may have a mixture of male and female characteristics. Some affected people prefer the term “intersex,” an umbrella term used to describe people who are born with biological variations in sex characteristics that do not fit into typical male or female categories. Other sports have rules for athletes with DSDs, where increased testosterone levels can lead to increased muscle mass and strength. For example, the World Athletics Federation only allows athletes with DSD to compete in Women’s Track and Field Events if they have reduced testosterone levels.
Interestingly, the IBA (International Boxing Association) stated that it would issue a bonus of US$50,000 to Carini, who withdrew from the competition, and her association and Coach would each receive a reward of US$25,000, which is the same as if Carini had won the gold medal. The IBA consider these payments to be “Compensation” for the IOC endangering the health of female boxers by making them fight men. IBA President Kremlev said: “I don’t understand why they want to kill women’s boxing – and kill women in boxing. For safety reasons, only qualified fighters should be allowed to participate in boxing matches. I can’t bear to see her cry.” However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned the IBA from participating in the Olympics as early as 2019, and criticized the IBA’s Testing Process for being insufficiently specific and non-transparent. Last June (2019), the vote was 69 to 1 to sever ties with the International Boxing Federation, which was shrouded in allegations of bribery and match-fixing. All Boxing Events during the Paris Olympics are supervised by the International Olympic Committee.
But in May this year (2024), the IBA decided to continue to award bonuses to all athletes and associations who won medals at the Paris Olympics. The gold medalist will receive $50,000, their National Boxing Association will receive $25,000, and their Coach will receive $25,000, for a total of $100,000; the Silver medalist will receive $25,000, their association and Coach will each receive $12,500, for a total of $50,000; the Bronze medalist will receive $12,500, their association and Coach will each receive $6,250, for a total of $25,000.
The Italian protagonist of this incident, Carini, said about a day later – that she wanted to apologize to Khelif, saying that she would hug her if she had the chance to meet her, and she felt sad about the controversy caused by the incident.
