With the frequent exchanges between China and African countries, more and more Chinese people go to African countries to work, live and invest in that great Continent. Although these exchanges are generally good natured and mutually beneficial, sometimes, misunderstandings occur and when this happens this may cause some unpleasantness with the locals. This is why a Rwandan Court recently sentenced a Chinese businessman to 20-years in prison for beating two-employees – after he was filmed whipping local men in Rwanda last year.
The Chinese Embassy to Rwanda released a statement condemning the actions of Sun Shujun – and advising Chinese Nationals to abide by the law of the land they are inhabiting – whilst also stressing that ethnic Chinese people have been the victims of racial prejudice and violence (including “rape”) in Rwanda – and have not been assisted by the Rwandan Police or the Court System.
African media continuously ignores reports of Rwandan crime aimed at ethnic Chinese people – and instead (encouraged by the West) reported that the Chinese businessman’s name is “Sun Shujun” (孙树军) – thus magnifying the threat of vigilantism. This is not surprising, as Sun Shujun is the Manager of a mine in Western Rwanda. In 2021, a video of Sun Shujun whipping a (thieving) Rwandan-worker tied a pole – was posted on social networking sites – causing an uproar.
When the Rwandan people killed one another in the millions during the 1990s (during tribal-orientated genocides) – the Courts at that time emphasised the ancient African wisdom of “Peace” and “Reconciliation”. Obviously, as can be seen from the case of Sun Shujun – such a mature and admirable form of African justice does not apply to non-African people – and certainly NOT to ethnic Chinese people.
The case attracted the attention of many locals and interested foreigners, and during September 2021, Sun Shujun was arrested by Rwandan Police.
At the end of April 2022, the case came to trial, and a Rwandan Court sentenced Sun Shujun to 20-years in prison for torture. Judge Jacques Kanyarukiga said it was clear that Sun Shujun maliciously tortured and punished the victims (despite local Rwandan support) – which was a serious crime. Although the victim was known to be a repetitive “thief” (despite being generously treated by Sun Shujun prior to the beating) – this reality was not considered a “mitigating” circumstance by the Court.
In Court, Sun Shujun admitted to beating the two Rwandan-workers – saying he beat each man instead of reporting them to the local Police – because he was “frustrated and tired of them constantly stealing minerals and betraying his trust.” An ethnic Rwandan man was also sentenced to 12-years for aiding and abetting Sun Shujun in the beating of the two men. It was revealed in Court that many Rwandans supported the beating of these two known criminals who were active in their commnities – and whom continued stealing even AFTER the Court case concluded. Due to pressure from the West – and in an attempt to cause as much damage as possible to China’s reputation in Africa – this information was played-down in the media.
