On October 13th, 2023, siblings Eileen, Celine, and Muhammad Al-Khayyat were martyred, in the arms of their mother, (who was also martyred), accompanied by her husband, his father, and his mother – in the city of Rafah, South of the Gaza Strip. The children had recently contacted their uncle, Karim Abu Al-Rous, who lives in Belgium – asking him if they could come and live in safety – as they were afraid of Zionist aggression.
Sadness fell upon Abu Al-Rous, who saw pictures of the martyred children on social networking sites and television screens since the start of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip. He compared these pictures with his memory of his sister’s beautiful children. He posted a video of his niece, filmed by her father, singing “I’m Natural Like This.” She was referring to how much she loved life with her father, mother, siblings, and grandparents – explains Abu Al-Rous.
He told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, “My family members are not great in number – and will never be. I always remember the loving and kind Eileen. She loved everything and sang a lot. Celine too. They were closer to my heart than I was to myself. The Israeli Occupation killed them while they were in their mother’s arms – when they were afraid.” “The whole family was in one room.” He added: “They took them out in pieces. A few months ago, my sister Hadeel had received a job promotion at her work in the Rafah Governorate and was appointed as a Secondary School Teacher. She dreamed of a beautiful future for her children and was happy to have given birth to a boy. To me, she was a loving mother, a close sister, and a smart nanny.” “She was the first to give me books to read. She always believed in the importance of reading, and this is the approach she tried to follow with her children.”
Abu Al-Rous says that Elaine was only dreaming of living in safety during the last days, like the always laughing Celine. They often asked me to leave Belgium and live with them in Gaza. They thought that life was perfect, but they were unaware of the many consequences. As for Muhammad, he was still an infant, no more than 45 days old. He only remembers his screams from the intensity of the bombing. The Khayyat siblings are among more than 2,000 children whose deaths were announced by the Ministry of Health.
In addition, the concerned Authorities, including the Ministry of Health and Civil Defense, recorded about 1,450 reports of missing persons under the rubble of homes, more than half of whom were children. Rescue teams are still searching for them, and the Ministry of Health has allocated a tent in Al-Shifa Hospital and elsewhere for the martyrs who no one has yet identified.
On Thursday, the 12th of this month, the Israeli Army committed a massacre against the Shehab family, in Northern Gaza Strip, in which 44 individuals were killed, including 25 under the age of 18, and 10 children under the age of 10, the youngest of whom was Abdel Karim Shehab, who was not more than two years old. A relative of the martyrs, Jihad Shehab, who took shelter in Al-Shifa Hospital, explains that there are no shelters for children, as is the case with the Israeli Occupation, and he tells Al-Arabi News: “The child does not know where to go or where to hide. His refuge is only a home and the embrace of his family, and they are not safe during Israeli attacks! Gazans follow some strategies that may protect them from the aggression, including gathering in corridors away from windows and doors that may harm their bodies as a result of the force of the bombing.”
Shehab points out that he has three children. He was injured in the head, and his 5-year-old child, Zain, in the back. They were at home in the town of Jabalia, forming a circle with others, making sure to place the children in the middle, hoping that they would not be hurt. But one of the Israeli raids caused major damage to his house, which led to his injury and his child.”
The Al-Zaanin family was also displaced from the town of Beit Hanoun to Hamad Towers, in the Southern Gaza Strip, in the city of Khan Yunis, and witnessed an Israeli massacre at the beginning of the days of the Israeli aggression, which claimed the lives of 21 martyrs, including 9 children. The child, Osama Al-Zaanin (10 years old), survived the massacre with moderate head injuries. But he is experiencing major psychological trauma. While he was being treated in Beit Hanoun Hospital, the Israeli Occupation bombed it – as the Zionists knew there was children there – and he saw his friend and cousin, Muhammad (11 years old) killed In it.
Al-Zaanin’s mother, Aisha, lives with 9 other women and 10 children in one room, and her injured son is with her. She tells Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed: “My son survived an injury to his two feet. Fortunately, we found the medications he needed before pharmacies closed and the health crisis worsened. But he is still under the influence of shock, and it is increasing with time. Our house was destroyed. Even if the aggression ends, we do not know what to do. Our house was destroyed. I don’t know where to go and what to do. But I don’t want to lose my son.”
For her part, psychotherapist Amal Abu Zabada is trying to organize sessions and activities for children in displacement schools in the city of Khan Yunis, in the Southern Gaza Strip. She works as a government employee in a mental health clinic and is unable to go to the clinic due to the emergency the Gaza Strip is experiencing. Through her sessions with children, she indicates that the current aggression can cause serious psychological disorders for children.
Abu Zabada tells Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed: “Previously, we used to provide parents with awareness sessions about the necessity of concealing scenes of killing and destruction from children, which is What was previously possible. But as the aggression continued, things became different. It is not possible to hide what is happening from children who realize that some of their colleagues have been martyred. Children in Gaza carry many worries. They witnessed things that adults could not bear.”
In addition, lawyer and Human Rights activist Ashraf Abdullah is one of the participants in drafting legal memorandums related to the targeting of children to be referred to International Courts, especially the targeting of children in Gaza during the Israeli attacks in 2014 and 2021. But he points out that International Courts – especially the International Criminal Court – imposes many obstacles, knowing that Israel does not respect the rights of the children in Gaza.
Israeli Occupation does not observe any International Laws and does not respect the rights of children, including the need for medical assistance, food, shelter, and clothing, which are guaranteed by the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols. During the current (2023) aggression, the Zionists are committing war crimes – as they did on all previous occasions.
The Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols of 1977 recognize that children must be the subject of special respect, that they be protected against any form of indecent assault, and that they are provided with the necessary care, relief, or protection of those who affect them. During hostilities, assistance, and protection must be granted, especially for children in areas of armed conflict.
Abdullah told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed: “Some provisions in International Agreements talk about protecting children who have been orphaned or separated from their families, and providing special facilities that guarantee their physical safety, and this is what the children of Gaza are currently experiencing. However, Gaza is not included in International Laws and Agreements.” “In light of the Israeli siege, International and Human Rights Observers are also prevented from entering to assess the general situation, and we often rely on local Human Rights Teports, and this is very unfortunate.”
It is noteworthy that the World Health Organization announced that it urgently needs to reach Gaza to deliver aid and medical supplies, warning of a Humanitarian Crisis in the Gaza Strip. The Regional Emergency Director of the WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean Office, Dr. Richard Brennan, said that the organization held meetings with “decision makers” to provide access to Gaza as soon as possible. Since the beginning of the war, 5,087 people have been martyred, including 2,055 children, 1,119 women, and 217 elderly people, while 15,273 others were injured, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. It is noteworthy that the Occupation committed one of the most horrific massacres in the Gaza Strip when it targeted the Baptist Hospital by bombing, which led to the death of more than 500 Palestinians, the majority of whom were women and children who took to the hospital as a safe refuge from the ongoing Israeli raids.

أطفال غزة الشهداء… ليسوا أرقاماً في حياة عائلاتهم ومن عرفهم

في 13 أكتوبر/ تشرين الأول الجاري، استشهد الأشقاء إيلين وسيلين ومحمد الخياط، وهم في حضن والدتهم التي استشهدت أيضاً برفقة زوجها ووالده ووالدته في مدينة رفح، جنوب قطاع غزة. كان الأطفال قد أجروا اتصالاً أخيراً مع خالهم كريم أبو الروس المقيم في بلجيكا، يسألونه إن كان باستطاعتهم المجيء إليه للعيش بأمان، هم الذين كانوا يخشون العدوان.
خيّمَ الحزن على أبو الروس، هو الذي يرى صور الأطفال الشهداء على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي وشاشات التلفزة منذ بدء العدوان الإسرائيلي على القطاع. يرى الصور ويحاول البحث في ذاكرته عن أخرى جميلة لأولاد شقيقته. نشر فيديو لابنة شقيقته أعده لها والدها، وهي تغني “أنا طبعي كدة”. كانت تشير إلى مدى حبها للحياة مع والدها ووالدتها وأشقائها وجديّها، كما يوضح أبو الروس.
ويقول لـ”العربي الجديد” إن “أفراد عائلتي ليسوا أرقاماً ولن يكونوا كذلك. دائماً ما أذكر إيلين المحبة واللطيفة. كانت تحب كل شيء وتغني كثيراً. سيلين أيضاً. كانا أقرب إلى قلبي من نفسي. قتلهما الاحتلال الإسرائيلي وهما في حضن أمهما وقد كانتا خائفتين. كان جميع أفراد العائلة في غرفة واحدة”. يضيف: “أخرجوهم أشلاءً. شقيقتي هديل كانت قد حصلت قبل أشهر قليلة على ترقية وظيفية في عملها في محافظة رفح، وعينت معلمة في المرحلة الثانوية. كانت تحلم بمستقبل جميل لأطفالها، وكانت سعيدة بإنجابها صبياً. كانت بالنسبة إليّ أماً حنونة وشقيقة مقربة ومربية ذكية. كانت أول من أهداني كتباً للقراءة. لطالما آمنت بأهمية المطالعة وهو النهج الذي حاولت اتباعه مع أولادها”.
ويذكر أبو الروس أن إيلين كانت تحلم فقط بالعيش بأمان خلال الأيام الأخيرة، حالها حال سيلين الضحوكة دائماً. كثيراً ما طلبتا مني ترك بلجيكا والعيش معهما في غزة. كانتا تظنان أن الحياة فيها مثالية فهما غير مدركتين للعواقب الكثيرة. أما محمد، فكان لا يزال رضيعاً لم يتجاوز عمره الـ45 يوماً. ولا يذكر إلا صراخه من شدة القصف. الأشقاء الخياط هم من بين أكثر من 2000 طفل أعلنت وزارة الصحة عن استشهادهم.
إلى ذلك، سجلت الجهات المعنية، من بينها وزارة الصحة والدفاع المدني نحو 1450 بلاغاً عن مفقودين تحت أنقاض المنازل، أكثر من نصفهم أطفال. ولا تزال فرق الإنقاذ تبحث عنهم، وقد خصصت وزارة الصحة في مستشفى الشفاء وغيرها خيمة للشهداء الذين لم يتعرف إليهم أحد بعد.
ويوم الخميس الموافق لـ12 من الشهر الجاري، ارتكب الجيش الإسرائيلي مجزرة في حق عائلة شهاب، شمال قطاع غزة، والتي راح ضحيتها 44 فرداً، منهم 25 تحت سن 18 عاماً، و10 أطفال تحت سن العاشرة، كان أصغرهم عبد الكريم شهاب الذي لم يتجاوز العامين. ويوضح أحد أقارب الشهداء جهاد شهاب، والذي اتخذ من مستشفى الشفاء ملاذاً له، أنه لا ملاجئ للأطفال كما هو الحال لدى الاحتلال الإسرائيلي، ويقول لـ”العربي جديد”: “الطفل لا يعرف أين يذهب أو أين يختبئ. ملجؤه منزل وحضن ذويه فقط وهما ليسا آمنين. يتبع الغزيون خلال الاعتداءات الإسرائيلية بعض الاستراتيجيات التي قد تحميهم من العدوان، من بينها التجمع في ممرات بعيداً عن النوافذ والأبواب التي قد تؤذي أجسادهم نتيجة قوة القصف”.
ويلفت شهاب إلى أن لديه ثلاثة أطفال. أصيب هو في الرأس وطفله زين 5 سنوات في ظهره. كانا في المنزل في بلدة جباليا يشكلان مع آخرين مثل حلقة، ويحرصون على وضع الأطفال في المنتصف على أمل ألا يصابوا بأذى. لكن إحدى الغارات الإسرائيلية أحدثت أضراراً كبيرة في منزله ما أدى إلى إصابته وطفله”.
كما نزحت عائلة الزعانين من بلدة بيت حانون حتى أبراج حمد، جنوب قطاع غزة، في مدينة خان يونس، وقد شهدت مجزرة إسرائيلية في بداية أيام العدوان الإسرائيلي راح ضحيتها 21 شهيداً، من بينهم 9 أطفال. ونجا الطفل أسامة الزعانين (10 سنوات)، من المجزرة وقد أصيب إصابات متوسطة في الرأس. لكنه يعيش صدمة نفسية كبيرة. فبينما كان يعالج في مستشفى بيت حانون، قصفها الاحتلال الإسرائيلي ورأى صديقه وابن عمه محمد (11 عاماً) فيها.
والدة الزعانين عائشة تقيم مع 9 نساء أخريات و10 أطفال في غرفة واحدة، وابنها المصاب معها، تقول لـ”العربي الجديد”: “نجا ابني من إصابة في قدميه الاثنتين. لحسن الحظ، وجدنا الأدوية التي يحتاجها قبل إغلاق الصيدليات وتفاقم الأزمة الصحية. لكنه لا يزال تحت تأثير الصدمة، بل إنها تزداد مع الوقت. دمر منزلنا. وحتى إذا ما انتهى العدوان، لا نعرف ماذا نفعل. منزلنا دمّر. لا أعرف إلى أين أذهب وماذا أفعل. لكن لا أريد خسارة ابني”.
من جهتها، تحاول المعالجة النفسية أمل أبو زبدة تنظيم جلسات وأنشطة للأطفال في مدارس النزوح في مدينة خان يونس، جنوب قطاع غزة، هي التي تعمل موظفة حكومية في عيادة للصحة النفسية، ولا تستطيع التوجه إلى العيادة بسبب حالة الطوارئ التي يعيشها القطاع. ومن خلال جلساتها مع الأطفال، تشير إلى أن العدوان الحالي يمكن أن يسبب اضطرابات نفسية خطيرة للأطفال.
وتقول أبو زبدة لـ”العربي الجديد”: “سابقاً، كنا نقدم للأهالي جلسات توعوية عن ضرورة حجب مشاهد القتل والدمار عن الأطفال، وهو ما كان ممكناً في السابق. لكن مع استمرار العدوان، بات الأمر مختلفاً. لا يمكن حجب ما يحصل عن الأطفال الذين يدركون أن بعضاً من زملائهم استشهدوا. الأطفال في غزة يحملون الكثير من الهموم. وقد شاهدوا أموراً لا يتحملها الكبار”.
إلى ذلك، يعد المحامي والناشط الحقوقي أشرف عبد الله من المشاركين في صياغة مذكرات قانونية تتعلق باستهداف الأطفال لإحالتها إلى المحاكم الدولية، وخصوصاً استهداف الأطفال في غزة خلال الاعتداءات الإسرائيلية عام 2014 و2021. لكنه يشير إلى أن المحاكم الدولية وخصوصاً محكمة الجنايات الدولية، تضع الكثير من العراقيل، علماً أن إسرائيل لا تحترم حقوق أطفال غزة.
لا يراعي الاحتلال الإسرائيلي أي قوانين دولية ولا يحترم حقوق الأطفال، منها الحاجة إلى المساعدة الطبية والغذاء والمأوى والملبس، وهو ما تكفله اتفاقيات جنيف وبروتوكولاتها الإضافية. وخلال العدوان الحالي، فإنها ترتكب جرائم حرب كما فعلت سابقاً.
تقر اتفاقيات جنيف لسنة 1949 وبروتوكولاها الإضافية لسنة 1977 بوجوب أن يكون الأطفال موضع احترام خاص، وأن تكفل لهم الحماية ضدّ أي صورة من صور خدش الحياء والتأكد من موافاتهم بالعناية الضرورية والإغاثة أو الحماية لأولئك الذين يؤثرون في الأعمال العدائية، المساعدة والحماية خاصة للأطفال الموجودين في مناطق النزاعات المسلحة.
ويقول عبد الله لـ”العربي الجديد”: “بعض البنود في الاتفافيات الدولية تتحدث عن حماية الأطفال الذين تيتّموا أو انفصلوا عن عائلاتهم، وتوفير المرافق الخاصة التي تضمن سلامتهم البدنية، وهذا ما يعيشه حاليا أطفال غزة. إلا أن غزة غير مشمولة ضمن القوانين والاتفاقيات الدولية، في ظل الحصار الإسرائيلي. كما يمنع دخول مراقبين دوليين وحقوقيين لتقييم الوضع العام، والاعتماد غالباً على تقارير حقوقية محلية، وهذا مؤسف جداً”.
يشار إلى أن منظمة الصحة العالمية أعلنت أنها بحاجة للوصول بشكل عاجل إلى غزة لإيصال المساعدات والإمدادات الطبية، محذرة من أزمة إنسانية في القطاع. وقال مدير الطوارئ الإقليمية بمكتب شرق المتوسط التابع لمنظمة الصحة العالمية، الدكتور ريتشارد برينان، إن المنظمة عقدت اجتماعات مع “صناع القرار” لإتاحة الوصول إلى غزة في أقرب وقت ممكن. ومنذ بداية الحرب، استشهد 5087 شخصاً منهم 2055 طفلاً و1119 امرأة و217 مسناً، فيما أصيب 15.273 آخرين، وفقاً لوزارة الصحة الفلسطينية. يشار إلى أن الاحتلال ارتكب واحدة من أبشع المجازر في القطاع واستهدف بالقصف مستشفى المعمداني، ما أدى إلى استشهاد أكثر من 500 فلسطيني، غالبيتهم من النساء والأطفال الذين اتخذوا من المستشفى ملجأ آمناً من الغارات الإسرائيلية المستمرة.
