ALEXANDER WERTH [PART III]: RUSSIAN ARCTIC CONVOY PQ-16 – May in MURMANSK (USSR) – MERCHANT NAVY SHIP “EMPIRE BAFFIN”! (2.9.2023)

Following on from “Part I” and “Part II” – this is a chapter from Alexander Werth’s 1947 book entitled ‘The Year of Stalingrad’ – dealing with the events of WWII pertaining to the Soviet Union! He has arrived safely in Murmansk – where he will be disembarking and travelling to Moscow. Although some of the ships (including the “SS Empire Baffin” – which Werth was aboard) that comprised the PQ-16 Convoy would end their mission in Murmansk – others would carry-on to Archangel in the relatively ‘safe’ waters of the Soviet coast. Here, the reader is introduced into what the war was like for the average Soviet citizen – although the intensity varied depending upon the area. Hitler, in his attempt to stop the Russian Arctic Convoys, focused a great deal bombing attacks upon Murmansk! In all this clinical assessment, we must not forget the ‘bravery’ of Alexander Werth – whose work is ignored today due to his left-wing leanings and refusal to participate in the US-generated Cold War slander of the Soviet Union. And yet his work – much of which is first-hand experience – sticks out a mile in authenticity when compared to those numerous fabricated narratives that the British public are now force-fed!

I will add a few chapters dealing with the Battle of Stalingrad as time unfolds. The coverage is so exact and precise that Werth’s work is a little overpowering in its directness and honesty. Today, following the US strategy of deliberately misrepresenting the history and purpose of the USSR – the younger generations have literally no idea what their grandfathers did during WWII – particularly with regards to the Russian Arctic Convoys! Quite often, as was the case with PQ-16, it was the US contingent that comprised the greater number of the ships! Thousands of American men risked (and lost) their lives delivering vital aid to the USSR – a place that would be demonised by every US Administration post-1945! Study these words carefully and development a genuine understanding of Soviet hitory!
