The Banpo Site is located at the eastern outskirts of Xi’an in Shaanxi Province. It is a large Neolithic site of the matriarchal Yangshao Culture dating back over 6,000 years ago, covering an area of about 50,000 square meters. Divided into three parts, residential quarters, pottery making area and burial ground, the site is abundant in cultural relics. Over 10,000 stone tools and artefacts, 250 tombs and six large kilns have been excavated at the site. The Banpo Museum is the first museum dedicated to the study prehistoric settlement sites in China.
