Wow Signal 1977

Email: What Was the 1977 “Wow Signal”? (4.7.2026)

Dear S

The “Wow Signal” was a powerful, 72-second (narrow-band) radio signal detected on August 15th, 1977, by Ohio State University’s “Big Ear” telescope in Delaware, Ohio. Originating from the direction of the Sagittarius constellation, it was so intense and cleanly matched expectations for an alien transmission that astronomer Jerry Ehman circled the data and wrote “Wow!” Recent research suggests it could have been a natural astrophysical phenomenon: a “hydrogen flash” or “maser” – triggered when a passing flash of radiation (like a magnetar flare) suddenly excites a cold interstellar hydrogen cloud. You see, the “mysterious” almost always possesses a “material” explanation even if we cannot see the answer at the time of enquiry. The cosmos still appears eerily quiet and we may well be the only life in it.

As you can see, Column 2 (J05) read “6, E, Q, U, J, 5” – whilst the signal strength measured thirty-times more power than the earth produces in a single-year. The receiving telescope had been methodically scanning the cosmos since 1963 and nothing out of the ordinary had been found despite thousands of hours of analysis. The Receiver was tuned to 1,420 MHz (21 cm) – the Hydrogen-Line Frequency that many believe represents a universal communication corridor that could be used by alien civilisations. The Signal appeared at 10:23 EST – lasted for 72-seconds at 30 times the usual background strength of all the earths radio and TV signals combined – and then ceased forever. This signal originated from a single point of origin outside the earth.

The signal had travelled around 220 light-years – meaning its journey began in the year 1757 (a reply would take a similar length of time – suggesting an all-round trip of 440 light-years). To arrive at earth in such a powerful state means that its source technology would have to be extraordinarily powerful whilst boosting the signal as it traversed interstellar space. If it was the product of natural phenomena, then it was a process that scientists did not yet understand at the time. However, many assume this signal to be artificial in nature, and deliberate in intent – as it was designed to reach earth and to be received and understood by those on earth. As technology as improved immeasurably, this frequency has been observed and re-observed – with nothing found.
