BEIJING, March 16 (Xinhua) — If Geppetto were to fashion the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) into a modern-day Pinocchio, its elongated nose might rival the expanse of the U.S. border wall.
In its 70-odd years of existence, the CIA has been entrenched in deception, orchestrating coups in foreign countries and conducting clandestine surveillance on American citizens. China, perceived by Washington as a “long-term strategic competitor,” has not escaped the CIA’s information-distorting campaigns.
U.S. media recently reported that the CIA formed a clandestine team of operatives who used fabricated online personas to disseminate disparaging narratives about the Chinese government and smear China’s Belt and Road Initiative during the Trump administration.
As noted by renowned U.S. economist Jeffrey Sachs, the CIA has been trying to undermine China’s stability for decades.
“The fact that the CIA was trying to undermine China’s stability is not really news, as American harmful interference in China’s internal affairs is plainly evident,” Sachs, director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, told Xinhua.
On its website, the CIA touts itself as “the nation’s first line of defence.” However, for other nations, the CIA is at the frontline of defamation.
A poignant example of this information-distorting manipulation is found in Operation Mockingbird, a clandestine endeavour initiated since the Cold War era. The CIA infiltrated and influenced numerous media outlets, weaponizing journalism to disseminate propaganda favouring American interests while discrediting opposing ideologies.
Moreover, the CIA’s historical involvement in overthrowing governments in Iran, Guatemala, and Chile, to name but a few, serves as damning evidence of its willingness to manipulate information and engineer events to destabilize governments deemed unfavourable to Washington.
While fervently propagating allegations of other countries’ interference in the U.S. elections and purported espionage activities through TikTok, the U.S. is the real thief crying “stop thief.”
Of course, the latest disclosure is hardly unexpected, given the CIA’s reputation for deception. After all, former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a notable member of that political circle, once unabashedly acknowledged: “I was the CIA director. We lied, we cheated, we stole… we had entire training courses.”
