Degrelle Meets Churchill ‘Myth’ – IHR Responds! (23.8.2023)

Dear Adrian Chan-Wyles,

Thank you for your message.

You brought to my attention the claim, apparently from the dust jacket of an unauthorized edition of Leon Degrelle’s memoir, that Degrelle met with Winston Churchill. I am not aware of any evidence to support this claim. Indeed, I’m confident that if such a meeting had actually taken place, either Degrelle or Churchill, or both, would have at least mentioned it somewhere in their prolific writings.

The “About the Author” text that you sent as an attachment, is from an edition of Degrelle’s wartime memoir that was not issued or even authorized by the Institute for Historical Review. It is from a “pirate” edition that was published in England without our authorization.

Sincerely,

Mark Weber

Dear Institute for Historical Review

I attach the back dustcover to Leon Degrelle’s book entitled ‘Campaign in Russia – The Waffen SS on the Eastern Front’ (originally a French-language biography covering his time in the Belgian SS) – although the above reference is from the 1985 ‘English’ language rendition – published by the ‘Institute for Historical Review’. The back dustcover states that Degrelle met Churchill – implying that this meeting happened in 1936 (the same year Degrelle met Hitler).

I would be very grateful if you could provide the historical reference for the statement that Leon Degrelle met with Winston Churchill in 1936.

Thank you for your time in this matter.

Dear Mark Weber

Thank you for your interesting reply.

Please be advised that we have checked the records of the Holocaust Memorial Museum (US) and the records of the Churchill Archives of Cambridge University (UK). Both historical Authorities agree that no such meeting took place – and this finding will be reflected in the resultant research paper.

Please be further advised that the edition in question carries the following (verifiable) indicators that suggest this book was indeed authorised by the IHR:

a) ‘British Library Cataloguing Title’ = 940.54’21 D7564

b) ISBN 0-947554-04-1

c) Production origin of the USA

d) UK Export designation (1985) – from the USA

e) The Crecy Publishers (UK) edition is ‘Copyrighted’ to the ‘Institute for Historical Review’ (US)

Yours Sincerely
