Redux: The Fujian Sword Incident Enlarged and Explicit! (23.8.2023)

An academic colleague in China forwarded me the numerous ‘live’ video clips that recorded an incident last May in Fujian province (Xiamen) – which saw a student use a short Japanese sword (Wakizashi) to cleanly ‘cut-off’ the left-hand of of one of his tsrgets. Interestingly, some Chinese people do use the Japanese swords. I have isolated above a picture of the moment the hand is ‘detached’ through receiving a ‘clean’ cut from the bladed weapon! My teacher did (Master Chan) as the Hakka people picked these objects up off the battlefield and-or took them from the enemy soldiers they killed. Generally, Chinese people prefer the shorter Japanese sword over the longer (Katana) version. I accessed the Chinese-language news article and translated all the details. The cut was so clean that the surgeons were able to fully attach the hand – and a full recovery is expected. The attacker (who intended to hack his target to death) comes from ‘Sanming’ – a City situated in West Fujian – some 146 miles to the West of Fuzhou City.

The attacker, however, travelled by bus the 179 miles between Sanming in West Fujian – to reach Xiamen in South Fujian (with Xiamen being 57 miles Southwest of Quanzhou). Fuzhou, the coastal areas and the a number of in-land places are famous for Southern Shaolin Temples and gongfu styles which eventually formed the ‘Kata’ of Okinawan Karate-Do. What Chinese people are protesting about is the apparent ‘lose of control’ – rather than the violence – which was not much of an issue.

All this was triggered over an online ‘insult’ in a Chatroom used by immature teenagers. The victim did not fall-down when his left-hand was lopped-off – but joined his friend in running to safety. His hand was located later – and transported to the surgeons – who then carried-out their work. The Chinese way of using the Japanese sword is considered ‘incorrect’ by the Japanese themselves – but effective in practice. It is used as a streamlined machete.

Douyin ‘Influecer’ Shi Jiaming was suddenly attacked by a youth wearing a black T-Shirt and wielding short (single-edged) sword (probably of ‘Japanese’ design! Shi Jiaming attempted to parry or block the sword as a diagonal blow – aimed at his midriff – sudenly crashed-down, but in so doing, his left-hand was completed ‘severed’ from the forearm at the wrist! This attack happened during a live broadcast within the grounds of the Xiamen Huatian Foreign Affairs College. The online video showed that the two cooperating men (in white) were broadcasting outdoors in front ofthe campus coffee shop when the attacker (in black) swinging a sword suddenly appeared behind the two and started chopping!

Shi Jianming’s Severed Left-Hand!

It is thought that the attacker mistook Shi Jiaming for his intened target – his broadcasting partner (and fellow ‘Influencer’) ‘Ye Jian’an’ – the latter of whom escaped the incident entirely injury free despite being the reason for the attack! Ye Jian’an is said to have ‘insulted’ the attacker ‘live’ on air and cause the attacker to ‘lose face’ in front of thousands of internet users. After being slashed, the two Youths (one minus a hand) ran for safety towards a nearby basketball court. The attacker followed on – still swinging the blade through the crowded area – attracting little attention from onlookers. The sword appears to be ‘short’, and ‘single-handed’ – probably more like a Japanese Ninja-sword (rather than the ‘double-handed’ Japanese ‘Wakizashi’ that was being previously reported) – and not any version of a Chinese ‘straight’ (Jian) sword that I know of.

After investigation by the Xiamen Municipal Public Security Bureau – the suspect was revealed to be a 14-year-old boy named ‘Luo’ – who was dissatisfied after experiencing an internet quarrel with the victims Shi and Ye. Although Shi lost his left-hand (the worst injury) both victims also suffered further lacerations from the sword blows that were relatively easy to treat.
