Many people may remember that on January 23rd, 2001 – on the Eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year – Li Hongzhi (李洪志) repeatedly urged his followers to “let go of life and death” and move “toward the final consummation”! Listening to this brainwashing was Wang Jindong (王进东) and seven other “Falun Gong” addicts! Together, these misled cult victims participated in the so-called “1.23” Tiananmen Square self-immolation tragedy that shocked China and the world! This disaster resulted in the death of two of these individuals – with serious injuries suffered by three others!
Now, nearly four years have passed since that tragic time. Among the seven people who participated in the Falun Gong Cult self-immolation that year, the mother and daughter victims Liu Chunling (刘春玲) and Liu Siying (刘思影) both passed away – one after another – due to severe burns they suffered. Wang Jindong and Liu Yunfang (刘云芳) were both given sentences in Zhengzhou Prison (in Henan Province). Hao Huijun (郝惠君) and Chen Guo (mother and daughter) together with Liu Baorong (刘葆荣) – all returned to Kaifeng with their faces completely destroyed. The survivors all received long-term medical care and therapeutic education. The dead are now gone – but what about the living? How are their lives now?
Under the arrangement of the State Council Information Office, an interview team was jointly formed by Xinhua News Agency, People’s Daily, China Radio International, China News Service, Hong Kong Wen Wei Po, Associated Press and CNN as well as other Chinese and foreign media outlets. The interview took place on January 18th, 2005, at Zhengzhou Prison – with Wang Jindong and Liu Yunfang being questioned together with Xue Hongjun (薛红军) – one of the primary organizers of the self-immolation incident. Wang Jindong, Liu Yunfang and Xue Hongjun are now free of the psychological control formerly exercised by Li Hongzhi’s mental control – and are full of remorse and indignation when the situation that unfolded four years ago is discussed. Wang Jindong stated that there is only one word in his mind now for Li Hongzhi and his “Falun Gong Cult” – and that is “hate”!
He is now heartbroken when he considers just how obsessed he was with the “Falun Gong Cult” to the point where he would follow orders to commit suicide or even murder! “The ‘Falun Gong Cult’ is synonymous with ignorance.” Liu Yunfang – who also actively participated in the self-immolation incident under Li Hongzhi’s mental control – recalled “When I was about to ignite the lighter – if it was not for the compassion of the police who saved me – I would have been finished! I would have ended up with my face destroyed like Wang Jindong, Hao Huijun and Chen Guo!” After their failed suicide – and the world new that their Falun Gong Cult method had failed to protect them from the flames – Li Hongzhi issued a formal statement denying that these victims were genuine “Falun Gong disciples”! When asked about this, Xue Hongjun stated “Li Hongzhi said that we are fake practitioners, and the that the Falun Gong Cult technique we relied upon did not work because of this. How many years have we cultivated? I started practicing the Falun Gong Cult technique in 1994. We were all experienced Falun Gong Cult practitioners and were certainly not beginners.”
Wang Jindong – who has woken up from a nightmare, not only got rid of the heavy superstitious shackles of the past – but has also actively helped other “Falun Gong Cult” victims to get out of the same nightmare! In his own words, “After I wake up and regain my senses, I have developed vital and important responsibilities and obligations.” Due to severe burns, Wang Jindong’s fingers were glued together due to his Falun Gong Cult activity prior to his imprisoned. In June 2004, following concern for his welfare by the government of China, he had recovered movement and function through expert surgical treatment – and he showed his repaired hands to reporters! “Now I can move freely once again!” Liu Yunfang, 61, felt apologetic “I was more obsessed than the others – so I am conscious of the fact that I have caused much suffering due to my influence over others. The last time I saw a foreign reporter – I had not yet woken up yet!” But he remembered the date “September 27th, 2003″ clearly. He said it was the day he broke with the “Falun Gong Cult”! Thinking of Hao Huijun and Chen Guo (mother and daughter) – Xue Hongjun said with emotion that he was “very lucky”. Knowing that Hao Huijun and Chen Guo were well taken care of by the government of China, he said that he possesses more “peace of mind!”
Wang Jindong said that in his spare time, he likes to read books and write articles. During the interview, we learned that because Wang Jindong (and the other three Falun Gong Cult victims) were fully reformed whilst in prison – their sentences have been commuted in accordance with the law. They have regained their freedom of thought and peace of mind – and are full of remorse and hope for their future life. Xue Hongjun told reporters that he, Wang Jindong and Liu Yunfang meet frequently, and the topic they talked about the most is their future life plans. “It is important to stay emotionally, psychologically and physically healthy!” he said.
“I will never forget the care and love the government of China (and Chinese society) has shown for me even though I committed crimes, encouraged others to do the same and caused much suffering!” Wang Jindong’s words represent the voice of all three of the surviving victims of the Falun Gong Cult!

新华社郑州1月18日电（记者田雨）不少人也许记得，4年前的1月23日，正值中国农历除夕，在李洪志一遍遍“放下生死”“走向最后的圆满”的催促声中，王进东等7名“法轮功”痴迷者制造了震惊中外的“1·23”天安门广场自焚惨剧，最终造成了两死三重伤的严重后果。
如今，那悲惨的一幕已经过去近4年了。当年参与自焚的7个人中，刘春玲、刘思影母女因烧伤过重医治无效先后离开人世，王进东、刘云芳二人正在河南省郑州监狱服刑，面容全毁的郝惠君、陈果母女以及刘葆荣回到开封接受长期教育和妥善安置。逝者已矣，但生者何如？他们现在的生活怎么样？
在国务院新闻办公室的安排下，新华社、人民日报、中国国际广播电台、中新社、香港文汇报、美联社和ＣＮＮ等中外媒体联合组成的采访团，于18日在郑州监狱采访了王进东、刘云芳，以及自焚事件组织者之一的薛红军。
摆脱了李洪志精神控制的王进东、刘云芳和薛红军三人，提起4年前的情形，仍悔恨交加、义愤不已。王进东说，对李洪志和“法轮功”我的内心里只有一个“恨”字。
他现在仍旧心悸当初自己竟然对“法轮功”痴迷到自杀乃至杀人的程度。“‘法轮功’就是愚昧的代名词。”同样在李洪志精神控制下积极参与自焚事件的刘云芳回忆说，“当我即将把打火机点着的一瞬间，不是警察救我我也完了，也像王进东、郝惠君、陈果那样面目全非了。”提起自焚事件发生后，李洪志矢口否认他们是“法轮功弟子”的事情，薛红军表示，“说我们是假的，天理不公，我们修了多少年啊，我从1994年就开始练。”
噩梦醒来的王进东，不但自己摆脱了昔日沉重的精神枷锁，还积极帮助其他“法轮功”痴迷者走出梦魇。用他自己的话说，“清醒后的我，有责任也有义务。”由于严重烧伤，王进东入狱时指缝粘连。2004年6月份，在政府的关心下，通过手术剥离已经恢复功能，他把手伸给记者看，“现在活动自如。”61岁的刘云芳心怀歉疚，“我比他们更痴迷，所以我觉悟最难。上次外国记者来时，我还没有醒悟过来呢。”但他对“2003年9月27日”这个日子记得清清楚楚，他说这是他与“法轮功”邪教彻底决裂的日子。想起了郝惠君、陈果母女，薛红军感慨自己“非常幸运”。得知陈果母女被政府安置照顾得很好，他说自己“内心平安些。”
王进东说自己在劳动之余，喜欢看点书，写点文章。采访中得知，由于王进东等三人在狱中改造较好，已被依法减刑。心理已趋平静的他们对未来的生活充满眷恋和期盼。薛红军告诉记者，他和王进东、刘云芳三人经常见面，谈论得最多的话题就是将来的生活计划。他说，“保持身体健康很重要。”
“政府和社会对我的关心和爱护是我永远不能忘记的。”王进东的话代表了他们三个人的心声。
