It’s regrettable that the Jamaican Government has given in to the pressures of the US administration and terminated the cooperation agreement in the field of #Salud with #Cuba, which had brought multiple medical benefits to that people for decades. Over the past 30 years, more than 4,700 collaborators 🇨🇺 have provided medical assistance on that island. Since the start of the Operation Miracle programme in Jamaica in 2010, vision has been restored or improved for nearly 25,000 🇯🇲 people. There are goodbyes that don’t fit in an airport.
This week, in Jamaica, while the return of the Cuban Medical Brigade to Cuba is being confirmed, many eyes well up with tears in hospitals, polyclinics, and communities where for years a presence became routine: that of women in white coats with a Cuban accent. There are 190 women in a brigade that has left a profound mark on the country’s health. Doctors, nurses, specialists, and technicians who learned to name Jamaican towns as if they were their own and to recognize faces that were no longer just patients, but part of a shared history. That’s why today in Jamaica there are tears and also gratitude. The white coats are returning home. But their mark will always remain.

Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba
Cuba regrets decision of the government of Jamaica to cease medical cooperation by giving in to pressure from the United States
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba informs that, on March 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jamaica informed our Embassy in that country of its government’s unilateral decision to terminate the cooperation agreement on health matters that has linked both nations for decades.
With this action, the government of Jamaica gives in to pressure from the United States government, which is not concerned about the health needs of the Caribbean brothers.
Cuba deeply regrets that a history of fruitful and sustained collaboration that has brought countless benefits to the Jamaican people, who are now deprived of the basic and specialized health services provided by Cuban collaborators, is underestimated in this way.
In view of the step taken by the government of Jamaica, the government of Cuba has taken the sovereign decision to proceed with the return of the Cuban Medical Brigade. These health professionals leave behind an indelible mark and return to Cuba with the satisfaction of having fulfilled their duty and the permanent willingness to assist wherever their vocation of solidarity is required.
Cuba’s work in Jamaica is an eloquent example of genuine cooperation. During the last 30 years alone, more than 4,700 Cuban collaborators have provided medical assistance on the Caribbean island. Today, the Brigade was composed of 277 professionals, whose work has had a tangible and profound impact on strengthening the Jamaican health system.
The historical results of this collaboration speak for themselves:
· More than 8,176,000 patients served.
· 74,302 surgical interventions performed.
· 7,170 births attended.
· More than 90,000 lives saved.
In addition, through the Operation Miracle programme, present in Jamaica since 2010, nearly 25,000 Jamaicans have had their vision restored or improved. Cuban cooperation has also been decisive in projects for the control and prevention of diseases such as malaria and in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The most recent example of this delivery was evidenced after the passage of Hurricane Melissa, which severely affected the island. In those difficult circumstances, the Cuban Medical Brigade remained firmly in its posts, many of its members working for more than 72 continuous hours and actively joining the recovery tasks of hospitals and communities.
Faithful to the historic relations of brotherhood and solidarity that bind us to Jamaica, Cuba ratifies its unwavering commitment to the Jamaican people, who will always be able to count on Cuba’s disinterested cooperation.
