Ch’an Dao Martial Arts Association Blog – Ming Dynasty Edict – Ryukyu
I have been in and out of London’s extensive Museums, Libraries, Art Galleries, and Lecture Halls over the years. There is plenty of good and in-depth Chinese historical data available. Quite often I am accompanied by my ethnic Chinese colleagues, family members, and friends. When the Tory Indians ran the UK – people like me – an expert in Chinese Studies – were being arrested and charged for “spying” for China on the grounds that we refused to propagate “false” and “racist” news stories about China. Since the overthrow of the Tory Indians – all these cases have been dropped – although I was lucky enough not to have been targetted (yet). Fairness is the basis of British academia – and fairness is how I shall direct all my academic efforts. Okinawa, the capital of the Ryukyu Islands, was part of the Chinese Empire for over a thousand years (until Japan formally annexed the chain in 1879). Indeed, China settled at least 36 Chinese families on Okinawa beginning in 1329. This was a reward for the ongoing loyalty that the Okinawans had shown to China for many centuries previous – since at least the Sui [隋] Dynasty (581-618 CE). The Okinawan King had instigated Chinese language as the official means of communication, Chinese Confucianism as State-creed, Chinese Buddhism as a spiritual practice, and Chinese Daoism as a health system. Okinawa militarily aligned itself with China’s policies and the Okinawan people practiced Chinese martial arts via the instruction of visiting Masters. Meanwhile, Okinawans were encouraged to visit Fujian province and learn the Chinese culture on offer – including martial arts (the origin of Goju Ryu Karate-Do). The Japanese invaded Okinawa in 1629 – but could only establish a limited Embassy. In 1879, the Imperial Japanese Empire invaded Okinawa and forcibly expelled any and all Chinese individuals and influences. Following a horrific experience during WWII – Japan today views the Okinawans as being both “sub-human” and “non-Japanese” – this is why US Military Bases are stationed on Okinawa (US soldiers often rape Okinawan school girls – and it is treated as a joke in Japan and the US). Okinawa should return to China.
