I know that one or two Death Rooms are maintained within certain HM Prisons in the UK – just in case anyone is Sentenced to Death for some reason – or the Death Penalty is re-introduced. Usually, the inmate spends his or her last night in an austere cell with a Prison Officer being present (and awake) all night (the prisoner can sleep if they can). At around 9:00 am the next morning (the time might vary) – the cell door bursts open and a Senior Officer (accompanied by the Hangman, Chaplain, Doctor, and Governor, etc) walks briskly into the room orders the prisoner to “Stand-up!” The prisoner is then told to quickly swallow a shot of Whiskey and and turn around with his or her hands behind their back. The Hangman (and his Assistant) then apply the shackles to the wrists – whilst a false panel is suddenly removed in the cell-wall – revealing the Death Room to be immediately adjacent. The prisoner is then forcibly guided toward the waiting noose – which hangs above a bare-floor with a “white” chalk-mark running across its centre.
The prisoner is positioned beneath the noose – often facing West (if the Hangman is religious or superstitious) – avoiding the holy direction of “East”- The Hangman applies a large hood over the head, neck, and upper shoulders (this hides the look of horror and the devastation the drop inflicts upon the neck, eyes, tongue, and ears, etc), and pinions the lower legs to together (this prevents the prisoner instinctively kicking-out and preventing the drop by the feet touching the sides and wedging the body). The noose is placed around the neck with the knot position to the left of the throat – this “twists” and “snaps” the vertebrae in the neck as the body falls and the noose tightens. It is said that such is the “jolt” of the drop that women suffer a prolapsed womb – which sees her innards exist through the vaginal opening.
Generally speaking, the Hangman will leave the body hanging for one-hour before the back of the neck is “measured” to prove the bones are separated. Immediately after the Execution is complete – all involved head to the Prison Canteen where they eat a special slap-up breakfast – a celebration that the Will of the State has been successfully carried-out. The Hangman then must return and take-down the body – which is stripped naked and washed before being re-dressed in burial clothing. The deceased body is then placed in a cheap wooden coffin and buried somewhere in the prison grounds in an unmarked grave – whilst the Chaplain carries-out all the relevant duties and procedures. The “Prison Number” of the inmate is inscribed on a secret map recording the location of the grave – kept only in the Governor’s Office. In the UK Judical System – the body of a convicted and executed felon belongs permanently to the State – and can never be given back to his or her family.
This is a form of Eternal Damnation – a punishment designed to continue even after physical death has been inflicted. This punishment stems from the Old Testament and is entirely Judaic in nature – premised entirely upon “retribution” and “revenge”. Obviously, this has nothing to do with the forgiving teachings of Jesus Christ. When the State “kills” – it does so in the name of everyone living in that State. The State assumes all are in agree with its actions. The State “kills” to prove “killing” is “wrong” – whilst an innocent person who has been executed – cannot be given their life back.
