Microsoft has denied cutting-ties with China (due to threats from Trump) that is true – but according to Reuters – Microsoft does not deny cutting around 2000 jobs in China. This decision is relating to the Microsoft subsidiary in China known as “Wicresoft (微创软件 – Wei Chuang Ruan Jian) ” – literally “Small Intrusion Software”. Furthermore, the South China Morning Post reported last month that Microsoft has shut down an artificial intelligence technologies research centre based in Shanghai. Therefore, despite the upbeat denial by Microsoft and the Chinese government – the trend is definitely of Microsoft “retreating” from China. Trump, of course, has written entire books spitting vitriol at the PRC – referring to China as public enemy number one. Given this is the case, it would be absurd to think this lunatic would not cut-ties with China. I would go one step further and state that China should not trust the US regardless of who is in power – and deny things were that good prior-Trump. Microsoft Corp, on Monday, denied rumours that the company plans to cease operations in China.
A spokesperson said in a statement to China Daily that reports claiming that the company will stop operating in China are untrue, adding that all inquiries regarding the business and operations of Wicresoft should be directed to them.
Wicresoft was co-founded by Microsoft and the Shanghai municipal government in 2002. It is an independent firm providing IT services under a long-standing licensing agreement.
Screenshots of an internal email by Wicresoft HR (dated April 7th 2025) showed that due to evolving geopolitical dynamics and shifts in the international business environment, Wicresoft’s project with Microsoft will cease operations in China, effective April 8, 2025.
Wicresoft was not immediately available for comments.
