On January 23rd, 2001, seven “Falun Gong” addicts from Kaifeng City, Henan Province, were so beguiled by Li Hongzhi’s fallacies and heresies – that they set themselves on fire in Tiananmen Square, Beijing! One person was burned to death on the spot – whilst four others were severely burned (12-year-old Liu Siying later died after resuscitation failed). Two other Falun Gong Cult victims were stopped in time. This is the so-called “1.23” Self-Immolation Incident – a Cult-related crime that shocked China and the world. Today, 23-years have passed since the “1.23” Self-Immolation Incident took place – but the painful lessons are still with each and every one of us.
The Hard Facts Cannot Be denied!
After the self-immolation incident, the “Falun Gong” Cult tried its best to shirk responsibility and attempted to shift attention onto to the Government of China. It suggested that the tragedy was directed by the Government and perpetuated the fallacy that it was “paid actors”! However, these lies fell away as reliable data became available. One by one, the parties involved came forward to testify about the disillusionment they had suffered. The truth began to emerge from the live video recordings taken by Overseas Reporters; the accounts of survivors and victims, as well as the physical and mental injuries – all irrefutable evidence that the “Falun Gong” Cult harms lives! Even certain elements of the international media issued an anti-Falun Gong call for justice after investigation! Li Hongzhi’s repeated use of specific Falun Gong “scriptures” (calling for continued ‘self-sacrifice’) indirectly confirmed that he was the instigator of the “1·23” Self-Immolation Incident!
Facts can be either true or false – but cannot be true or false at once. It can be seen that the facts of the “1.23” Self-Immolation Incident are clear and the proof is conclusive – furthermore the “Falun Gong” Cult cannot credibly deny the evidence. It is Li Hongzhi’s fallacies (and heresies) that instigate his disciples to self-immolate. Facts have proven that the self-immolation of seven “Falun Gong” Cult followers was the inevitable result of being bewitched by Li Hongzhi’s so-called “Dharma Principles”!

On December 12th, 2000, Li Hongzhi issued his “Get Rid of the Last Attachment!” Edict – ordering his believers to:
“Get Rid of All Ordinary Attachments – Including Attachment to Human Life – So as to Reach a Higher Realm of Life!”
Li Hongzhi did this through advocating the theory of “Corrupted Flesh” and ordering believers to hate material existence and all things related to physical life. He claims: “The human body is the filthy and corrupt. It cannot be taken to Heaven under any circumstances. Therefore, no matter how well you perform self-cultivation – you will never be as good as the Heavenly Realm. As Heaven is pure and holy – the human-body cannot reach it and only traps the individual on this plain.” (2003 “Greater New York Area Falun Gong Conference Lectures”). Due to this teaching of Li Hongzhi – Liu Yunfang set herself on fire – in an attempt to leave her (dirty) body – and (transcend) to the “Falun Heavenly Kingdom”.
On the basis of the “Theory Corrupted Flesh”, Li Hongzhi further guided believers to exchange their own bodies for the path of becoming “Gods” that attain to “Perfection”. He said, “Because of your death, you receive blessings from God. Doesn’t this turn into a better good thing?” (“Lantern Festival Lecture 2003”), “God cannot die” ( “Lectures at the 2005 Canadian Falun Gong Conference”), “Have you ever heard of Paradise? The Falun World is more beautiful.” “The trees in this Paradise are golden, the ground is golden, the birds are golden, and the flowers are golden! Yes, the houses are made of gold, and even the body of the Buddha is shining with gold.” “So, when he succeeds in cultivation in the future, he will be able to get whatever he wants, have whatever he wants, and do whatever he wants.” Li Hongzhi used this rhetoric to deceive believers into committing suicide. When stating “You can become a god” – he tricked his believers into sacrificing their lives to dispose of evil and enter the “Falun Heavenly Kingdom”.
Liu Siying self-immolated with her mother in order to become a”Perfected God”. She told Reporters before her death: “We want to go to heaven, where there is gold everywhere, and the road to heaven is also paved with gold.” This is what her her mother told her before their suicides. No wonder the Falun Gong believers who participated in the self-immolation regarded life as trivial and even said goodbye to each other with the words “See you in heaven!”

Not only that, Li Hongzhi also described the dying process in this manner: “People do not feel fear at the moment of death. On the contrary, they suddenly feel a sense of relief and a potential sense of excitement; some people feel that they suddenly have no body. After being bound, they float up in a very light and beautiful way.” (“Falun Treatise”) This propaganda is used to trick believers into thinking that “death is a pleasure”, and those who self-immolate will certainly be happy to die!
Since people’s “flesh is dirty”, “death brings pleasure” and “God brings blessings,” – Li Hongzhi also said, “We talk about the immortality of the soul – this is not superstitious.” “We look at it from a high level. After death, the soul is immortal” – “When a person dies, it is just your outer layer of molecules – which is the human body. This outer layer of molecules dies and falls away – whilst your real body is composed of microscopic substances. How can you die? It is impossible” Those who self-immolate themselves believe that their body will be destroyed, and their spirit will remain. Only the soul will remain and will be immortal. What is burned is only the (outer) physical body, and will “perfectly ascend to heaven” and “return home”, so individuals are willing to burn themselves. Hao Huijun, the self-immolator, admitted that she “forgot about life and death” to “protect the Dharma” and “achieve perfection”.
It was under the influence of Li Hongzhi’s heresies – that 49-year-old Li Jinzhong and 26-year-old Chang Haochi (both from Tunliu County, Shanxi Province) believed that they had achieved complete “Perfection”! Following this Falun Gong Cult brain-washing – they burned themselves to death! Yan Jigang (from Jiutai City, Jilin Province) believed that they had also achieved “Perfection” He set himself on fire in a cornfield – killing himself! Cao Li was a 28-year-old mother (from Xixian County, Henan Province) who set herself on fire – together with her 1-year-old son! Tan Yihui (from Changde, Hunan Province) burned themselves – dying on Wanshou Road, in Haidian District, Beijing! Wang Baotao (from Jiyuan City, Henan Province) died in the city’s Century Plaza – setting himself on fire!

The irrefutable reality (and the bloody tragedy) of self-immolation lie with these “Falun Gong” believers who have proven at the cost of their lives that the fallacies and heresies fabricated by Li Hongzhi are so evil. Those who survive are always warning that Li Hongzhi is the culprit behind the “Self-Immolation” Incident!
What Do The Survivors Say?
The survivors who experienced the “1.23” Self-Immolation Incident are the most convincing. Wang Jindong, the Organizer of the Self-Immolation Incident, continued to reflect after surviving and wrote articles such as “Ignorance·Death·Rebirth” and “Falun Gong Cult Is Synonymous with Ignorance”, which introduced and reflected upon the “1·23” Self-Immolation Incident in detail. When another organizer – Xue Hongjun – learned that Li Hongzhi and his group did not admit that the self-immolators were Falun Gong disciples – his hands trembled with anger. “They are telling lies with open eyes. Li Hongzhi wants to shirk responsibility. It is unacceptable to the Gods!”
Some “Falun Gong” adherence saw through the true nature of the “Falun Gong” Cult following the “1.23” Self-Immolation Incident – and decisively gave-up superstition – staying away from Devil’s Compound. A number even joined the ranks of anti-Cult volunteer associations! For example, Chen Bin, a former Falun Gong believer, analyzed the “1.23” Self-Immolation Incident referencing his own experience. He wrote the article “How to Understand Li Hongzhi and the Falun Gong” – and whilst using his own understanding – saved many Falun Gong addicts from disaster! Zheng Xiaoyan, a former “Falun Gong” believer from Shandong Province – wrote from the bottom of her heart in the article “I’m glad I didn’t become the eighth person to self-immolate in front of Tiananmen Square” – “(If) the government hadn’t saved me in time, then the eighth person to self-immolate in Tiananmen Square would have been me!” From this – we can see how great the harm of “Falun Gong” is – how corrupt Li Hongzhi’s character is, and how much people hate the “Falun Gong” Cult once it is fully understood. The “1.23” Self-Immolation Incident is an eternal nightmare for those involved, and it is also a pain that can never be erased from people’s hearts!
Overseas Media (and Experts) Concluded from the “1.23” Self-Immolation Incident that the “Falun Gong” is a Cult!

Let’s take a look at how people outside the country view the “1.23” Self-Immolation Incident. Reuters reporter Jeremy Page wrote an article telling people: “I believe that the ‘Falun Gong’ has developed into an anti-human and anti-social Cult organization.” France’s “European Times” commented: “From the beginning – when Li Hongzhi preached superstition to now instructing believers to self-immolate – how can this be a practice of fitness or asking people to be good? From this point, we can also see that the ‘Falun Gong’ has long been degenerate. It has become a Cult.” Korea’s “Church and Heresy” published an article entitled “Falun Gong is a Cult”! The article stated: “Chinese and foreign reporters have jointly interviewed several survivors who participated in the self-immolation – and a Falun Gong practitioner who instigated the Self-Immolation Incident. The practitioners strongly condemned the Falun Gong as a Cult organization that deceives and fools their victims.” The United States “Time Magazine” commented in an article titled “Turning Point” published in the “Falun Gong” album: “The leaders of ‘Falun Gong’ concocted a clumsy remedy after the Self-Immolation. They did not admit that the five protesters may have been misled disciples of Falun Gong – and even denied any connection with them! Incredibly, the Falun Gong website insisted that the Self-Immolation was staged by Government Agents, and almost no one believed that line.”
Rick Ross, an expert on Cult issues in the United States, interviewed survivor Chen Guo and others. In his article, he analyzed the reasons for the tragedy and the dangers of the Cult. “The ‘Falun Gong’ chose to try to shift the responsibility to others instead of acknowledging the truth,” he said. “It was its fierce anti-government rhetoric that contributed to this tragedy.” “The teachings and practices of an organization can endanger critical thinking and undermine rational thinking. This is why this organization is called a Cult.” Ross reminded the world that “The Tiananmen tragedy proved from another aspect that Falun Gong is potentially dangerous and can be regarded as a destructive Cult”! Margaret Taylor Singer is recognized as “the world’s most important authority on Cult issues.” During her lifetime, she stated that she had read all the English translations of Li Hongzhi’s teachings and that she ascertained that the “Falun Gong” was typical of a destructive Cult. The irrefutable reality of the bloody Self-Immolation tragedy is that these “Falun Gong” believers have proven – at the cost of their lives – that the fallacies and heresies fabricated by Li Hongzhi are innately evil. They are always warning that Li Hongzhi is the culprit behind the “Self-Immolation” Incident.

The “1·23” Self-Immolation Incident made the world clearly see the true face of the “Falun Gong” Cult. Under Li Hongzhi’s mental-control, his evil teachings manipulated his believers to destroy lives, and it also made people understand the harmfulness of the Cult. The crimes committed by Cult leaders are countless. Only by staying away from Cults can people avoid falling into the evil traps carefully laid by Cult Organizations that poison all living beings!
