England and Argentina became the last two semi-finalists in the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday, after beating Norway and Switzerland, respectively.
England defeated Norway 2-1 in extra time with a brace from midfielder Jude Bellingham.
At Miami Stadium, the Three Lions came back from behind after starting at a disadvantage thanks to a goal from Norwegian Andreas Schjelderup and sealed their qualification thanks to two goals from Bellingham, who also figured in England’s victory over Mexico in the round of 16.
Norway opened the scoring in the first half with Schjelderup’s shot from the left flank that surprised goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after hitting the post.
However, in added time of the first period, Bellingham equalized the actions by receiving a pass from Anthony Gordon, eluding two defenders and finishing with a cross shot. The Norwegian national team claimed possible interference from the aerial camera on the ball, although FIFA ruled out that possibility after reviewing the records of the ball sensor.
In the second half, England improved with Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze coming on, although Norway came close to regaining the lead with a goal disallowed by VAR due to an earlier foul by Erling Haaland and a header by Kristoffer Ajer that hit the crossbar.
The decisive-strike came in extra time, when a rebound was conceded by goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, after Morgan Rogers powerful shot was taken advantage of by Bellingham to score the defining goal and secure his sixth goal of the tournament.
Shortly after, French referee Clément Turpin awarded a penalty in England’s favour, but the decision was reversed after VAR intervention.
In the final minutes, Norway tried to react, although they failed to clearly trouble the English defense, which secured the victory and the pass to the prelude to the final.
England will face Argentina in the semi-finals, also after a 3-1 win of Switzerland in extra time, in a match played this Saturday in Kansas City.
Switzerland surprised with a very offensive approach in the first minutes against Argentina, but it was the Albiceleste who started on top, thanks to a header from Alexis MacAllister (10).
The Swiss had nothing to lose, because they already put in the best performance in their history (coming fifth) when they were hosts, (in the very distant 1954), and that made them more dangerous.
After pressing a little more, they equalized against the World Champions in Kansas City on a run by Dan Ndoye in the 67th minute, but Breel Embolo was almost immediately sent off for simulating a foul (diving).
The Europeans managed to take the match to extra time, but with 10 men it was impossible for them to hold the draw and Julián Álvarez scored a great goal in the 112th minute that sent them home.
The final 3-1 was put by Lautaro Martínez (120+1) on a counterattack when Switzerland was desperately looking for an equalizer.

Inglaterra y Argentina se convirtieron este sábado en los dos últimos semifinalistas en la Copa Mundial de Fútbol 2026, tras imponerse a Noruega y Suiza, respectivamente.
Inglaterra derrotó 2-1 a Noruega, en tiempo extra, con un doblete del centrocampista Jude Bellingham.
En el Estadio Miami, Los Tres Leones remontaron el marcador tras comenzar en desventaja por un gol del noruego Andreas Schjelderup y sellaron su clasificación gracias a dos anotaciones de Bellingham, figura también en la victoria inglesa sobre México en los octavos de final.
Noruega abrió el marcador en la primera mitad con un disparo de Schjelderup desde la banda izquierda que sorprendió al guardameta Jordan Pickford tras golpear en el poste.
Sin embargo, en el tiempo añadido del primer período, Bellingham igualó las acciones al recibir un pase de Anthony Gordon, eludir a dos defensores y definir con un remate cruzado.
