As an older man myself, I am unperturbed by the passing of my father. This inner state of non-friction is a product of two distinct influences on my life – my father’s attitude to material reality (always be fearless and move forward when under fire) – and Buddhist meditation (remove greed, hatred, and delusion from within – and do not create the conditions that manifests these taints externally). It is a multifaceted approach to conflict resolution in the world. Yes – I have seen my father’s now deceased body – and it is a body that is no longer functioning. He is no longer in physical pain. Indeed, natural processes have removed his presence from the physical world – just as they brought him into it just over 84-years ago. This does not absolve those around him who contributed to his suffering – as they shall be forever damned – but such an attitude demonstrates that externally deriving ignorance will crush or divert our way of viewing the world. We will not bend or bow-down to tyranny. I remember a saying of Confucius who basically said that when young he was unsure about the correct way – but followed sound advice. As he aged – with each passing decade – he inwardly gained stability and understanding. When he reached 45 – he finally understood the Way directly – and everything he naturally did never diverted from its correctness. I suppose this is the wisdom of age. On the practical front, my father cannot be buried in Cockington because “there is no room”, and he cannot be buried in St Mary’s Church also because “there is no room” (two places he liked to wave from). Of course, we are told, there is plenty of room in the Pauper’s Section of Torbay Cemetery – wherever that is. I do not care, and I think my father would not care, as it is all just more worldly nonsense. Whilst this is unfolding, the popularity my father enjoyed (which has nothing to do with me) is spawning ideas of “statues” – but considering the Local Council and Police continuously harassed my father and attempted to arrest and intimidate him at every turn – you can bet your bottom dollar that no official marker will be sanctioned. Such is local politics.
