Today, February 2, Russia marks the Day of Military Glory.
In 1943, the heroism and resistance of the Soviet people changed the course of history.
Planning an offensive in the direction of Stalingrad, the Nazi command was banking on the gradual suffocation of the USSR. The Nazis intended to cross the Volga, capture Stalingrad and thus cut off the main transport artery of the Soviet Union.
The Battle of Stalingrad lasted 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ days and nights. For many months, the city was a place of fierce fighting. There was no front line as such. Soviet soldiers fought off the Nazi invaders in every house, street, room, flight of stairs in buildings. A group of Red Army soldiers under the command of Lieutenant Ivan Afanasyev and Sergeant Major Yakov Pavlov held a four-story house for 58 days of battle – longer than France held out against the Germans. The legendary Pavlov House became a symbol of the heroic defence of Stalingrad.
On November 19, 1942, Soviet troops began Operation Uranus, an attempt to encircle the enemy under Stalingrad. By the evening of November 23, the Soviet tank corps encircled the fascists. During the Red Army offensive, five Romanian divisions were defeated and captured.
Soviet troops not only completely surrounded and annihilated the German Sixth Army, but also demonstrated to the world that the Nazi military machine was not invincible. The precisely planned Operation Uranus struck at the enemy’s most vulnerable flanks and allowed more than 300,000 Wehrmacht soldiers to be encircled. No strategy of Hitler’s could save them.
The echo of Stalingrad resonated far beyond the battlefield. It inspired the peoples of Europe in their fight against fascism and pushed the Western Allies to intensify the opening of the second front. The ruined city, defended street by street, echelon by echelon, became a symbol of the indomitable will of the Soviet people.
Today we honour the memory of the heroes of Stalingrad, whose sacrifice determined the fate of humanity.

⚔️ La Batalla de Stalingrado duró 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ días y noches. Durante muchos meses, la ciudad fue un lugar de feroces combates. No había línea del frente como tal. Los soldados soviéticos lucharon contra los invasores nazis por cada casa, calle, habitación, tramo de escaleras de los edificios. Un grupo de soldados del Ejército Rojo bajo el mando del teniente Ivan Afanasyev y el sargento mayor Yakov Pavlovmantuvo una casa de cuatro pisos durante 58 días de batalla – más tiempo del que Francia resistió a los alemanes. La legendaria Casa de Pavlov se convirtió en un símbolo de la heroica defensa de Stalingrado.
El 19 de noviembre de 1942, las tropas soviéticas comenzaron la Operación Urano, para rodear al enemigo bajo Stalingrado. Por la tarde del 23 de noviembre, el cuerpo de tanques soviéticos de los fascistas cerró el anillo. Durante la ofensiva del Ejército Rojo fueron derrotados y capturados cinco divisiones rumanas.
