Chinese New Year in 2025 is a Very Special Year – Which Falls on January 29th!

The Chinese New Year’s Day in 2025 (4723) not only marks the beginning of the new lunar year, but it overlaps with the end of the previous Year of the Dragon (so that the Snake emerges in the Dragon’s Year). This is unusual as each old lunar year should definitely stop – whilst each new year should definitely start – with NO overlapping. Again, in all other years, the “phase” definitely changes and transforms (this explains why a temporary “phase” of qi-energy should not be translated into English as a permanent “element”).

The next New Year’s Day like this relating to the Year of the Dragon – will occur next in 2084-4782 (leading into 2085-4783) – therefore this New Year’s Day is a “once-in-sixty-years” event. Entering the Western year of “2025” is an ordinary year according to the Gregorian calendar, but it is the Year of (Stem Branch) “Yi Si” (乙巳) in the lunar calendar. This corelates to the Year of the (Yin) Wood Snake. The colours represented by the Yin-Yang Five Phases relating to Wood – are green and blue – therefore the Snake can be referred to as either “green” or “blue”. This year manifests four major characteristics which are very different to previous years – and which must be considered:

Four Major Differences for Lunar New Year 2025-4723!

1) Double Spring Year – Double 6th Lunar Month!

Therefore, 2025-4723 is a special year, because it is a “Double Spring Year” (“Spring” occurs twice within the same “single” lunar year – once at either end). The so-called “Double Spring Year” – means that there are two beginnings for Spring in one year (one at either end), and the reason for this lies with the fact that there are “two” lunar “six months” (in other words, this lunar month possesses an extra month following the sixth lunar month – which is simply repeated). This is similar to the leap year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars – used to regulate the season and ensure the calendar aligns directly with the correct time of the year that they are purporting to represent. This has been historically important for farming, food production, human survival, building, migration, and making war on neighbours, etc.

The first beginning of Spring of next year will occur on the sixth day of the first lunar month (February 3 in the Gregorian calendar), while the second beginning of Spring in the same lunar year will occur on the seventeenth day of the twelfth lunar month (February 4 in 2026-4724 in the Gregorian calendar). Since ancient times, the “Double Spring Year” has been regarded as an auspicious sign. It is believed that “double” symbolizes “good things come in pairs”, so this year is considered an auspicious year for carrying out major events. In addition to the “double spring” – 2025-4723 has another special feature, that is, there will be two lunar sixth months in this year.

2) Hot Summer Weather is Prolonged!

In 2025-4723, there will be not only two Springs, but also an extra sixth lunar month. How is this leap month established? Whenever there is a lack of “Central Energy” (中气 – Zhongqi) –  the ancients would add a month according to a certain algorithm, which manifests as a leap month. And the leap sixth month of 2025-4723 will add 30 days. This will make the already hot summer even longer. Maybe next year will have a “hot and scorching” summer.

3) No New Year’s Eve!

This is because the lunar calendar has long months and short months, and the long and short months are not fixed. A long month is 30 days, and a short month is 29 days. The twelfth month of the lunar calendar in 2024-4722 is a short month of just 29 days – but not a twelfth month of 30 days. Theoretically, therefore New Year’s Eve is missing.

4) The 2026-4724 Chinese New Year Will be Late!

Since the 2025-4723 lunar calendar has 13 months and 384 days, the 2026 Chinese New Year will be delayed, and the Spring Festival will fall on February 17th, 2026. We haven’t seen such a late Spring Festival for a long time. The Spring Festival holiday lasts for a week, and then school starts in China. The 15th day of the first lunar month will not be celebrated until March (in the solar calendar). This will cause the traditional “Dragon Raising its Head” celebrations (which should be held on the 2nd  day of the 2nd lunar month) to arrive late. From the perspective of the solar calendar, 2026 may appear to possess a later “Spring” – and suffer from a longer cold spell.

5) Clarifying the Year!

The Double Spring Year in 2025-4723 – is it really once every 19 years?

There are comments online saying that the Double Spring Year only occurs once every 19 years – but this is not accurate!

The leap year of the lunar calendar occurs approximately every three years, This is because a lunar year (i.e. the length of a lunar month cycle) is approximately 354 or 355 days, A solar year (i.e. the time it takes for the Earth to orbit the Sun) is approximately 365.24 days. Therefore, in order to make the lunar calendar consistent with the solar calendar seasons, an extra month, the leap month, is inserted into the lunar calendar every three-years or so. This sometimes results in a single lunar year containing the start of Spring “twice” (once at the beginning and once at the end) – spanning two solar years. According to the calendar, two Springs occur about 8 times every 19 years. From a traditional perspective, when the Green Snake manifests during a Double Spring Year – five types of people must wear red!

There is a saying among the people which says “When the Green Snake meets the Double Spring, five people should wear red”. Red represents auspiciousness and festivity in Chinese culture. Wearing red is believed to enhance one’s fortune and resist adverse effects. Which five types of people should pay special attention to “wearing red” in order to pray for blessings and good fortune? Let’s take a look!

a) People whose zodiac sign is the Snake!

For people born in the Year of the Snake, 2025-4723 is their zodiac year, and they will encounter all kinds of ups and downs. Wearing red can enhance personal fortune, resist the adverse effects that may be brought by the zodiac year, and bring good luck and success.

b) People with special zodiac signs!

In addition to people with the Snake sign, some people with special zodiac signs also need to wear red to enhance their luck. For example: people with the zodiac signs of Pig, Monkey, and Tiger. According to the zodiac numerology, these people may face some special challenges in 2025-4723.

c) People in poor health!

Red is considered the colour of longevity and health. For people in poor health or who wish to recover, wearing red may help boost vitality and restore health. Red can inspire people’s fighting spirit and vitality, allowing them to face life and treatment more positively.

d) Young Children!

Red symbolizes hope and vitality. Wearing red is believed to bring blessings to children, expressing the family’s good wishes for their children and implying the hope that they can grow up healthily and safely.

e) People with the Number “9” in Their Age!

People of middle-age – and whose birth year ends with the number nine – also need to wear red. Your birth year is in conflict with the 2025-4723 Stem-Branch “Yi Si” – so you are likely to encounter bad luck in this year. Wearing red can resolve bad luck.

When to wear red? How to wear red?

Wearing red is not limited to red clothes, red socks, and red belts, but can also be red jewellery, red mobile phone cases, as long as the items you carry with you are red.

There are two special days when wearing red is appropriate:

i) The first day of the first lunar month, during the Spring Festival, wearing red can add to the festive mood.

ii) The second is the beginning of Spring. As the beginning of the year, the beginning of Spring means the start of a new cycle.

Within China, there is a custom of “Avoiding Spring” (避春 – Bi Chun) at the beginning of Spring, that is, avoiding offending the numerous “Tai Sui” (太岁 – “Grand Aged”) gods that equate to the 12 stars opposite Jupiter (later expanded to 60 deities) – so people choose to wear red on this day in the hope of bringing good luck.

Everyone shapes their own destiny. Hard work, kindness and wise choices will help you succeed.

No matter what – I hope everyone will experience a smooth journey throughout the Year of the Snake (2025-4723) and welcome the arrival of boundless happiness and good luck!

有两个特别的日子适宜穿红,一是正月初一,春节之际,穿红更能增添喜庆;
