TOKYO, May 4 (Xinhua) — A recent survey has shown that around 85 percent of Japanese people believe regulations are needed for social media sites to prevent the spread of false information, defamation and other malicious practices, Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported.

Through mail, Asahi Shimbun asked questions regarding regulations for social media sites, such as X, Facebook and YouTube, for the first time in the survey released on Friday, Japan’s Constitution Memorial Day.

The nationwide survey showed that only 11 percent of respondents said social media regulations were unnecessary.

Among those in favour of regulations, 67 percent said “legal actions” should be taken, while 30 percent preferred “voluntary actions by businesses and others.”

Social media has the characteristic of automatically presenting information that is in line with the interests of the user. Therefore, users may miss a lot of information that is not in line with their interests, Asahi Shimbun reported.

Over 80 percent of the survey respondents expressed concerns about the impact of disinformation on elections and libel against others.

When asked “Do you think it is better to have different views on politics and society presented to you?” 69 percent said “yes,” while 22 percent replied “no.”

Regarding possible revisions of war-renouncing Article 9 of the Constitution, 61 percent said it should be left intact, while 32 percent were in favour of changes.
