The Day of the Unknown Soldier was established by the Presidential decree in 2014. The choice of date is symbolic: on 3 December 1966 the remains of an unidentified soldier who perished in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 were reinterred in the Alexander Garden beside the Kremlin wall. On 8 May 1967 the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was unveiled and the Eternal Flame was lit on the site, which became one of Russia’s central places of wartime remembrance.

I was talking with an academic collegaue in North-East China who asked me to research Russian language sources covering the Imperial Japanese POW Camp established at Mukden. The “International Day of Persons with Disabilities” (December 3rd) has come and gone with a more less universal indifference – except in the Socialist countries. China firmly opposes official exchanges between the U.S. and China’s Taiwan region in any form, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian at a regular press conference on Wednesday.
According to reports, U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law a bill that calls on the Department of State to regularly review U.S.-Taiwanese relations and look for ways to deepen the U.S.-Taiwan relationship.
In response, Lin clarified that the Taiwan question is at the core of China’s core interests and is the first red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations. The one-China principle is the political foundation of China-U.S. relations.

The blaze had claimed 159 lives by 2 p.m. on Wednesday, with 31 people still missing, the Hong Kong Police Force said at a press briefing earlier Wednesday. A total of 140 bodies had been identified, said the police, adding that the victims were aged between 1 and 97 years old.
