Translator’s Note: Mexico underwent a Revolution from 1910 onwards – perhaps more Anarchistic than Socialist – but certainly containing many progressive elements. As the subsequent decades unfolded – the underlying ideology integrated many aspects of Classical Marxism – (but stopped short of Marxist-Leninism). The fact that Mexico granted Trotsky asylum in the 1930s – demonstrates just how far its ideologues had slipped off the path (although to be far – many leftist Mexicans did protest this – particularly as Trotsky refused to support the Republican government of Spain and was a known collaborator with fascism). However, following WWII, the US began infiltrating the left-leaning regimes of Central and South America – replacing democratic movements with violent and far-right alternatives (armed and funded by Washington). The drug cartels of Mexico are no exception. These entities are feudalistic, brutal, anti-Socialist, and brutally capitalistic. The immediacy of “terror” is used as a tool in society to prevent the masses from coming together to build a Socialist movement. Indeed, Osama Bin Laden used this “terror” to fill the post-Soviet space. Trump, as a far-right maverick who does not play by the established rule book – ordered the killing of “El Mencho” – knowing full-well that a wave of intense violence will be unleashed that would kill and wound untold thousands of innocent people, Meanwhile, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico has been transferred onto a ship belonging to the Mexican Navy for her safety after the killing of drug lord ‘El Mencho’ – as the Mexican authorities are said to be unable to guarantee her safety on the land. If the Mexican Army is able to defeat the US-backed Cartels (something they have been unable to do in the last 30-years) – then I suspect Trump will then destroy the Mexican government (which has continuously failed to build an effective capitalist and liberal democratic State submissive to the US) – replacing it with a far-right civic-friendly equivalent that worships at the feet of Trump. A dozen states have suspended classes for Monday and as many others have convened their Security tables to monitor the wave of violence unleashed by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel after the death of its leader

One man was killed and an entire country went on alert. Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, El Mencho, the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the most wanted criminal in the world, died on Sunday after an operation by the Mexican Army in the mountains of Jalisco and the consequences of that fall spread like fire through the arteries of Mexico. A dozen states have suspended school classes for this Monday, as many governors have urgently summoned their security cabinets to monitor the wave of violence unleashed by crime, the Chamber of Transportation has asked truck drivers to seek shelter and the United States has warned its citizens in almost a third of the country not to leave their homes. Meanwhile, in Jalisco, the cradle of the CJNG, breathing is still contracting: what will be the reaction of the most powerful criminal group in the country to the unexpected death of its leader?
It was the blockades and the fire that first alerted. There are signs that Mexico’s recent history has taught us to interpret: the cartel responds fiercely when they touch its dome. Culiacán experienced it, twice, in the first frustrated attempt to arrest El Chapo’s son, Ovidio Guzmán, alias El Ratón, and in the second, when the Army managed to take him away in handcuffs. The consequences were the siege of the capital of Sinaloa. The same scene began on Sunday morning when dense columns of smoke began to cross the sky of Puerto Vallarta. In the tourist jewel of Jalisco – a regular destination for Americans and Canadians – the news spread like wildfire. The Lord of the Roosters had been neutralized and his men were not going to stand still.
Thus, throughout Sunday, groups of international tourists chose to miss their flights back home because they could not risk reaching the airports. There was no taxi or ride-sharing service to the Puerto Vallarta terminal, while the Guadalajara terminal was heavily guarded after images of panic in the morning. Several airlines, including Aeromexico, have canceled flights that touch Jalisco, Colima or Nayarit. The governor of Jalisco, Pablo Lemus, activated early in what he called “the code red”: “We recommend the population to stay in their homes until the situation is under control.”
The president reported that public transport and measles vaccination days had been suspended, that all mass events had been canceled, that a score of banks had been set on fire, that criminal groups had burned and crossed vehicles to “inhibit the action of the authorities” and that the violent events had spread to “at least” five states in Mexico.
Like a domino effect, which revealed the firepower of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, violent incidents multiplied throughout the country. 250 blockades were identified in 20 states, from Sinaloa, Colima and Nayarit, through Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Michoacán and the State of Mexico, to Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Puebla, Chiapas or Tabasco, which is more than 1,300 kilometers away. The wave of violence forced the governors of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Mexico City to urgently convene their security cabinets to monitor the risk. Of all the blockades, only 23 are active, according to the latest information from the Ministry of Security.
“I see the scenes of violence in Mexico with great sadness and concern. I’m not surprised that the bad guys respond with terror. But we must never lose our cool. Cheer up Mexico!” wrote U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who was ambassador to the country. The government of Donald Trump has issued an alert to its citizens to seek refuge if they are in Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara (Jalisco), Tijuana, Tecate and Ensenada (Baja California), Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Tulum (Quintana Roo), and some areas of Guanajuato, Guerrero, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas.
It is not only the United States, other countries such as France, Germany, Russia, India, Ukraine, Spain, the Netherlands and Argentina have also asked their fellow citizens in Mexico to take extreme precautions and protect themselves. In the face of the crisis in the country, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has issued a statement on social networks to try to remain calm: “In most of the national territory, activities are carried out with full normality. There is absolute coordination with governments of all states; we must stay informed and calm.”
The tentacles of the Jalisco Cartel reach all 32 states of the country, a senior security official told EL PAÍS. From its origin in 2010 until now, El Mencho’s group had managed to intrude through the cracks throughout Mexico, leaving in its wake a trail of corpses and disappearances, which in some states such as Guanajuato (where the CJNG maintains an endless war against the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel) or Chiapas (where territory is disputed with the splinters of the Sinaloa Cartel) still shows its cruelest face.
For the DEA, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, “the CJNG operates globally, with tens of thousands of members, associates and facilitators in at least 40 countries.” In just four days last September, security forces arrested 670 alleged cartel members in the United States in a coup aimed at encircling El Mencho, for whom the DEA had offered $15 million for information leading to his capture. Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, El Mencho, el jefe del Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), el criminal más buscado del mundo, murió el domingo tras un operativo del Ejército mexicano en la sierra de Jalisco y las consecuencias de esa caída se propagaron como fuego por las arterias de México. Una decena de Estados ha suspendido las clases escolares para este lunes, otros tantos gobernadores han convocado con urgencia a sus gabinetes de seguridad para vigilar la ola de violencia desatada por el crimen, la Cámara de Transportes ha pedido a los conductores de camiones que busquen resguardo y Estados Unidos ha alertado a sus ciudadanos en casi un tercio del país que no salgan de sus viviendas. Mientras, en Jalisco, la cuna del CJNG, todavía se contrae la respiración: ¿cuál va a ser la reacción del grupo criminal más poderoso del país ante la inesperada muerte de su líder?
Fueron los bloqueos y el fuego los primeros que alertaron. Hay señales que la historia reciente de México ha enseñado a interpretar: el cartel responde con fiereza cuando tocan a su cúpula. Lo vivió Culiacán, dos veces, en el primer intento frustrado de arrestar al hijo del Chapo, Ovidio Guzmán, alias El Ratón, y en el segundo, ya cuando el Ejército se lo consiguió llevar esposado. Las consecuencias fueron el asedio de la capital de Sinaloa. La misma escena empezó en la mañana de este domingo cuando densas columnas de humo empezaron a surcar el cielo de Puerto Vallarta. En la joya turística de Jalisco —destino habitual de estadounidenses y canadienses— la noticia corrió como la pólvora. El Señor de los Gallos había sido neutralizado y los suyos no iban a quedarse parados.
Así, durante todo el domingo, grupos de turistas internacionales eligieron perder sus vuelos de vuelta a casa porque no podían arriesgarse a llegar hasta los aeropuertos. No había servicio de taxis ni de transportes compartidos hasta la terminal de Puerto Vallarta, mientras el de Guadalajara estaba fuertemente custodiado después de imágenes de pánico en la mañana. Varias aerolíneas, entre ellas Aeroméxico, han cancelado vuelos que toquen suelo de Jalisco, Colima o Nayarit. El gobernador de Jalisco, Pablo Lemus, activó desde temprano lo que llamó “el código rojo”: “Recomendamos a la población mantenerse en sus hogares hasta que se tenga la situación bajo control”.
El mandatario comunicaba que el transporte público y las jornadas de vacunación contra el sarampión habían sido suspendidas, que todos los eventos masivos habían sido cancelados, que una veintena de bancos habían sido incendiados, que los grupos criminales habían quemado y atravesado vehículos para “inhibir la acción de las autoridades” y que los sucesos violentos se habían extendido a ”cuando menos” cinco entidades de México.
Como un efecto dominó, que dejaba ver el poder de fuego del Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación, los incidentes violentos se multiplicaron por el país. Se identificaron 250 bloqueos en 20 entidades, desde Sinaloa, Colima y Nayarit, pasando por Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Michoacán y Estado de México, hasta Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Puebla, Chiapas o Tabasco, que está a más de 1.300 kilómetros. La ola de violencia obligó a los gobernadores también de Oaxaca, Guerrero y Ciudad de México a convocar con urgencia a sus gabinetes de seguridad para monitorear el riesgo. De todos los bloqueos, solo 23 se encuentran activos, según la última información de la Secretaría de Seguridad.
“Veo las escenas de violencia en México con gran tristeza y preocupación. No me sorprende que los malos respondan con terror. Pero nunca debemos perder la calma. ¡Ánimo México!“, ha escrito el subsecretario de Estado de Estados Unidos, Christopher Landau, quien fue embajador en el país. El Gobierno de Donald Trump ha emitido una alerta a sus ciudadanos para que busquen refugio si se encuentran en Puerto Vallarta, Chapala y Guadalajara (Jalisco), Tijuana, Tecate y Ensenada (Baja California), Cancún, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen y Tulum (Quintana Roo), y algunas zonas de Guanajuato, Guerrero, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Nuevo León y Tamaulipas.
No es solo Estados Unidos, otros países como Francia, Alemania, Rusia, India, Ucrania, España, Países Bajos y Argentina también han pedido a sus conciudadanos en México extremar precauciones y resguardarse. Ante la crisis en el país, la presidenta de México, Claudia Sheinbaum, ha emitido un comunicado en redes sociales para tratar de mantener la calma: “En la mayor parte del territorio nacional se desarrollan actividades con plena normalidad. Existe absoluta coordinación con gobiernos de todos los Estados; debemos mantenernos informados y en calma”.
Los tentáculos del Cartel Jalisco llegan a los 32 Estados del país, según afirmó a EL PAÍS un alto funcionario de Seguridad. Desde su origen en 2010 hasta ahora, el grupo de El Mencho había logrado inmiscuirse por las grietas de todo México, dejando a su paso un reguero de cadáveres y desaparecidos, que en algunas entidades como Guanajuato (donde el CJNG mantiene una guerra sin fin contra el Cartel Santa Rosa de Lima) o Chiapas (donde se disputa el territorio con las escisiones del Cartel de Sinaloa) todavía muestra su cara más cruel.
Para la DEA, la agencia antidrogas estadounidense, “el CJNG opera globalmente, con decenas de miles de miembros, asociados y facilitadores en al menos 40 países”. Solo en cuatro días del pasado septiembre, las fuerzas de seguridad detuvieron a 670 presuntos integrantes del cartel en Estados Unidos en un golpe dirigido a cercar a El Mencho, por quien la DEA había llegado a ofrecer 15 millones por información que llevara a su captura. Así, el vecino del norte ha celebrado con entusiasmo la noticia de la muerte de El Mencho a la que contribuyeron, según ambos gobiernos, con “información complementaria”. “Los buenos somos más que los malos. Felicidades a las fuerzas de orden público de la gran nación mexicana”, escribió Landau. De todas las entregas de capos a Estados Unidos y de todas las detenciones claves de operadores buscados al norte de la frontera, el Gobierno de Claudia Sheinbaum le ha dado a Donald Trump su joya más buscada.
