PRC Embassy Protests Demolition of “Panama-China Friendship Park”!

Translater’s Note: As usual, the English version of this article was a little sparse in background data, and so I looked-up the stroy on Baidu (the Chinese-language internet). My own view is that this episode has all the hallmarks of Trump II – as one of his first (false) pronouncements was that Panama had “sold” the Panama Canal to China. Trump II threatened yet another US military invasion if matters were not reversed. Obviously, this destructive action is part of what the axis of evil currently demands. This monument declaring “China-Panama Friendship” is situated on a mountain over-looking the Panama Canal (in fact, from what I have read regarding travelogues, this mountain it is quite remote and difficult to access) – and Trump believes this symbolises a Chinese declaration of “control” of the Canal. The Park was built in 2004 by funds raised by various overseas Chinese organisations – with support from the Mainland Chinese government (which provided two stone lions). Chinese people first arrived in Panama in 1854 (during the Qing Dynasty – probably fleeing the highly destructive Taiping Uprising and the Hakka-Punti Clan Wars). Indeed, this park is officially termed the “150th Anniversary Monument to the Arrival of Chinese in Panama” (1854-2004). Ironically, Panama declared (also in 2004) that “March 30th” would be “Chinese People Day” (华人日 – Hua Ren Ri). The way things are going, I suspect “Chinese People Day” will soon be abolished. I have been agitating for years that China should stop using US English in its translations – the language of the enemy. ACW (30.12.2025)

(ECNS) — The Chinese Embassy in Panama on Monday expressed extreme shock, strong indignation and firm opposition after the municipal government of Arraiján forcibly demolished the China–Panama Friendship Park and a monument commemorating the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Chinese people in Panama.

According to the embassy, the demolition was carried out on Saturday night without any prior notice or communication with the Chinese community and despite unanimous opposition from overseas Chinese representatives at the site.

“The move not only brutally trampled on the collective sentiments of the 300,000 Chinese nationals and people of Chinese descent in Panama, but also severely harmed the friendly feelings of the Chinese people toward the Panamanian people,” the embassy said in a statement.

It also noted that the Chinese community organizations engaged in communications with the Arraiján city government as early as 2024, but received no substantive response. The Chinese Embassy in Panama also conveyed its goodwill to support the renovation of the park, only to be met with silence.

The Chinese side urged a thorough investigation into the demolition incident, and strict accountability for any illegal acts that undermined Panama’s historical heritage and social unity and stability. Meanwhile, it asked the municipal government of Arraiján to restore the China-Panama Park and the Chinese memorial at the original site after consultation with Chinese community groups, the statement said.
