Having witnessed (not “watched”) the continuous demise of Dr Who in recent years, I suspect the entire point of its coherent collapse is that the BBC is producing more content that prepares audiences for advertisements (a certainty when the TV Licence is abolished). Dr Who is now thoroughly anti-intellectual and reflects how British culture is being slowly but surely transitioned into US culture. Yes – I suspect this definite process of privatisation is deliberately being polarised by issues surrounding “race” and “gender” politics. Whilst “action” and “reaction” fight it out at the surface level – what is really going-on is being hidden and obscured (similar to the Tories attempting to replace living Tube-drivers with “Driver-less” Tubes – to cuts wages and disband Unions, etc). The UK’s branch of the Bourgeoisie is going about its “Americanisation” project in the UK in a relentless fashion that is destroying the fabric of British “Socialist” culture – which was hard-earned by the British working-class through two World Wars. Anyway, who’s counting and who cares? If the new trajectory of Dr Who is chopped into 5 or 10 minute segments – then mindless adverts being inserted into the gaps would make absolute sense and would improve the timing and balance. Dr Who is a microcosm of what is exactly happening on the macrocosmic level. Rampant individualism is replacing group responsibility.
Dr Who is the homeless person sat on the street-corner, the elderly relative lying in a piss-covered bed, an ill-person who cannot access an NHS bed, and the schoolchild that cannot gain a school-place. Dr Who is the NHS Nurse who works a 12-hour shift for a pittance – whilst queuing-up at the local Food Bank on their way home – so that they have enough to eat. Dr Who is a symptom of the neo-liberal project that destroys as it creates – in equal measure – and always to the benefit of the Bankers. Dr Who today is pointless and tiresome – but that is because I can see the bigger picture. The right-wing whines on about its fears and phobias – whilst the left-wing politely looks the other way – all variants of the Bourgeoisie.
If British Socialism was both preserved and functional – I wound not care who plays Dr Who or what madness any team of script-writers can come up with. Perhaps genuine creative madness gave the world the Daleks, Cybermen and the Time Lords, etc, but it is failing today – not because the right-wing is right – but because the right-wing is winning. The right-wing is winning because the Bourgeoisie is right-wing. A divisive Dr Who is merely camouflage for the destruction of all versions of European Socialism by the relentless spread and domination of US (capitalist-driven) culture. The Bourgeoisie is a past-master at “stealing” behind the scenes what it appears to be “giving” on the surface. Finally, Ncuti Gatwa, the new Dr Who, bizarrely made a comment in a recent interview – where he used a right-wing trope claiming everything “trickles-down” from the top – a fascist ideology proven “wrong” time and time again!
