During September 13th-14th, 2023, Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith, Secretary General of the Central Executive Committee of the Laotian People’s Revolutionary Party, the President of the Laotian People’s Democratic Republic (and his Delegation) paid a State visit to the Republic of Cuba – at the invitation of Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, First Secretary of the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, the President of the Republic of Cuba.
The activity of visiting and working in Cuba by the General Secretary, the President of the Laotian People’s Democratic Republic (and this Delegation) aims to strengthen and enhance the long-term friendship and cooperation between the two Communist Parties, the two Socialist States and the People of the two Progressive Nations (Laos and Cuba).
During this visit, Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith had a working meeting with Mr. Mayken D’Ades-Gannan Bermudez, First Secretary of the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, the President of the Republic of Cuba; Meeting with Esteban Lazo Hernandez, President of the People’s Power National Assembly of Cuba; Meeting with Manuel Marrero Cruz, the Prime Minister of Cuba as well as the former Senior Leadership of Cuba – where the two sides praised the cooperation between the two Communist Parties, the two Socialist Sates and the People of Cuba and Laos – who have a familiar and strategic friendship that has been strengthened day-by-day, which has brought benefits to the two Peoples of Laos and Cuba, as well as confirming that the two-countries will continue to promote the existing cooperative relations to maintain strength and stability. This will include the expanding of cooperation in various fields according to the potential of the two countries.
Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith took this opportunity to express his gratitude to the Communist Party, the State and the People of Cuba for providing valuable support to the Laotian PDR both during the liberation of the country in the past as well as during the protection and building of the nation now – especially the creation of human resources, medicine and sports, etc. In the meeting, both sides informed the other about the state of socio-economic development in each country and discussed (exchanged) opinions and directions to enhance the brotherly and cooperative relationship, strengthen the already strong unity between the two countries – so that it grows day-by-day and is effective step-by-step. In addition, they also exchanged opinions on the regional and international situation in which both sides have mutual interests.
On the occasion of the meeting with the leaders of the Republic of Cuba, Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith reaffirmed the consistent policy of the Communist Party and the Government of Laos towards the Communist Party and the Government of Cuba in the struggle in the regional and international arena, including the struggle to end the blockade of Cuba that has lasted for more than 60 years and expressed the success and victory that the Communist Party, the Government and the People of Cuba have achieved in protecting the results of the Revolution and the development of the country – as well as congratulating Cuba for hosting the summit of the Group of 77 countries and China at this time – which shows the international confidence and recognition of Cuba’s role in the international arena.
On this occasion, Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith also visited the Phidan Gadsto Centre and conveyed the National Gold Medal – that the government of the Laotian PDR gave to Mr. Phidan Gadsto in 1986 – to place at this centre and signed the Memorial Book recording the visit of the General Secretary, the President of the Laotian PDR at this time.
In addition, on the evening of September 14th, 2023, the General Secretary, (the President) also spoke to Laotian students who are studying in Cuba – at the Embassy of the Laotian PDR in Cuba – with a total of 29 students participating out of 30 who are studying in Cuba, as well as bringing a number of support materials to encourage the children of Laotian PDR.
The visit to the Republic of Cuba by Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith was warmly welcomed and was successfully completed from the beginning to the end, and it was an important contribution to increasing the number of creations and enhancing the friendship between the two Communist Parties, the two Socialist States and the People of the two Nations. On this occasion, the President of the Laotian PDR invited the President of Cuba to visit the Laotian PDR during the next appropriate occasion.
