Kent: Hidden (Pagan) Temple at Lullingstone Roman Villa! (17.6.2023)

51 min (34.4 mi) via M25 – Or 17 Miles as the Crow Flies!

We have visited Lullingstone Roman Villa on a number of occasions! As you can see, the route by car is circuitous. If er travelled down the old B roads its could be much quicker – providing the roads are clear of traffic and other obstructions (such as floods, fallen trees and landslides, etc. These types of roads also allow for herds of cows to be taken to and from their fields for milking! We usually spend about an hour driving to the place – and an hour driving back! English Heritage have built a large and ultra modern building over the Villa (c. 1 – 4 centuries CE) itself which safely houses the structure and protects it from the weather. This building is also a ‘Museum’ and ‘Study Centre’ that facilitates thousands of school children each each!

However, I was recently given an ‘old’ guidebook to the place originally dated to 1961 – when these places still belonged to the British people (via the government) and were kept-up through taxation. We had noticed that outside there is a row of about 100-steps climbing a small hill that leads to a row of densely packed trees. There are NO signs and the modern guidebook makes no mention of what lies BEHIND the trees. In the ‘old’ guidebook – referenced below – there is definite mention of a Roman (Pagan) Temple built in the Greek style! Apparently, this was not ‘accessible’ even in the 1960s – whilst today the presence of this structure is NOT even mentioned! I find it odd that there is NOT even a model of this Temple inside the main building! Why is this?
