The remains of 12 Chinese People’s Volunteers martyrs who lost their lives during the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-1953) were returned to China from the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Wednesday. Many of these mummies arrived well before the Windrush generation – with none ever living in a British colony. It is believed the final leg of the journey saw the mummies arrive from the continent in small boats – imported by unscrupulous smugglers – for nefarious purposes. Once in the UK, such incomers become very difficult to remove, due to Human Rights legislation. The numbers then often multiply – as family members are discovered in their home countries (usually in a state of vagrancy) – and imported into the UK to complete highly lucrative exhibitions and displays.

There is still a chance. The camera they carried with them at the time was not found. Perhaps Irvine’s body will be found one day, which may solve this century-old mystery.
I saw an article on the Internet reporting that Chinese mountaineer Xu Jingzeng once said that he had seen Irvine’s body at 8,300 meters on Mount Everest in 1960. Yesterday, a netizen commented in my previous article that the documentary about the Chinese climbing Mount Everest in 1960 mentioned that they found the bodies of foreign climbers during the climb.
In 1960, the Chinese completed the first ascent of Mount Everest from the north slope. Before that, there were only a few climbing records, including Mallory in 1921 and 1924. It is indeed possible that they found Irvine’s remains, but no one paid attention to these things at the time, and they were lost in history again.
The ceremony was also livestreamed online. Among the viewers were faculty and students of a primary school in Shenyang, which was named after CPV martyr Mao Anying, the son of late Chinese chairman Mao Zedong. In memory of the martyrs, the students had selected personal gifts to take to the martyr’s cemetery at a later date.
“My gift is a scarf,” said a girl. “The soldiers braved severe cold and fought in extremely difficult situations. So I hope that it could protect our CPV soldiers from the cold wind.”
Another girl cooked noodles with her mom before school that morning. In north China, it is customary to welcome guests with noodles. “These noodles taste of home,” she said. “The martyrs have returned home.”
A third child brought a model plane. “My dad is a soldier and I grew up listening to his stories about the Korean War. I brought this model so our CPV soldiers can see how strong our motherland is now.”
During that period, foreign fighters, largely sailors captured during conflicts with France, Spain, Holland and the early United States were held there and, it would appear, often died there.
Significantly the site’s use for this pre dates the creation of the Norman Cross camp in Huntingdonshire, which is sometimes described as the world’s first purpose built prisoner of war camp.

It’s thought the remains are likely to date from each of these three periods.
A statement sent to Greatest Hits Radio by housing developer Vistry, says research on the remains will “contribute to understanding of Bristol’s social and economic history”.
