Fifty years ago, on March 29th, 1973, American troops, having suffered defeat, evacuated from Saigon. The Vietnam War lasted 11 years and claimed the lives of about 2 million civilians, more than a million Vietnamese military and about 60,000 American soldiers. Seven million tons of bombs were dropped on Vietnam and 80 million litres of poisonous substances were dropped on the non-White population! In the photograph – there is a popular lighter of the time favoured by American soldiers during the Vietnam War. The inscription reads: “We are the unwilling, led by the incompetent, to kill the unfortunate, we die for the ungrateful.” Perhaps these words convey not only the essence of that war through the eyes of a soldier – but the essence of all wars!

Война во Вьетнаме продолжалось 11 лет и унесла около 2 миллионов жизней мирных жителей, больше миллиона вьетнамских военных и порядка 60 тысяч американских солдат. На Вьетнам было обрушено 7 миллионов тонн бомб и вылито 80 миллионов литров отравляющих веществ. Но я хотел написать не об этом.
На фото — зажигалка американских солдат времен Вьетнамской войны. Надпись гласит: «Мы — нежелающие, возглавляемые некомпетентными, чтобы убивать несчастных, умираем за неблагодарных». Пожалуй, эти слова хорошо передают суть той войны глазами солдата.
