Croydon: Raymond Riesco Gallery
Raymond Riesco (1877-1964) was a British Solicitor who collected stamps as well as Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Chinese works of art and objects of historical interest. He left his collection to Croydon Council for ‘free’ exhibition in 1964, but Croydon Council chose to sell 24 of the most valuable Chinese pieces in 2013, an act that led to Croydon Council being stripped of its accreditation with Arts Council England – and yet we are grateful to Croydon Council for keeping this exhibition ‘free’ for the masses to access. We think Raymond Riesco was an extraordinary human being and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit yesterday to the Croydon Clocktower!
