Blogger’s Note: I have been asked why it has taken so long for this service to resume – when similar trains have been traversing between Russia and the DPRK for years after Covid-19. Therefore, we know that Covid-19 was the reason this service was halted – but why it took six-years to resume is something of a mystery – particularly as the language used to describe this event sounds as if the resumption was unplanned and “not expected”. Some think the service had been permanently cut with no plans for its re-introduction. Of course, despite the treaties involving mutual assistance – I suppose either country can do as they please. PYONGYANG, March 12 (Xinhua) — An international passenger train from the city of Dandong in northeast China’s Liaoning Province to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) arrived in Pyongyang on Thursday.
Xinhua reporters witnessed the arrival at a railway station in central Pyongyang, the capital of the DPRK.
Chinese Ambassador to the DPRK Wang Yajun, some other Chinese diplomats, and an official in charge of external affairs at the DPRK railway ministry came to the platform of the station to greet the passengers arriving on the train.
Extending a warm welcome, Wang described the resumption of the rail link as “a good development the peoples from both countries have been looking forward to and a significant event in bilateral relations.”
China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. announced Tuesday that international passenger trains connecting China and the DPRK would begin operating in both directions on Thursday.
The services will connect Beijing and Dandong with Pyongyang, helping facilitate cross-border travel and boost economic, trade and cultural exchanges between the two countries, the Chinese railway operator said.
Trains between Beijing and Pyongyang will run four days a week, with two-way services scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, while the Dandong-Pyongyang train service will operate daily in both directions, the operator said.
The train link was suspended in January 2020.
Admin’s note: It seems that, after almost 6 years of cutting 90% trade with China, rails and communication links are reconstructed. This means that DPRK will diversify its partners further while keeping its historic links. This will also permit tourism and travel. Yesterday was a significant day for the development of friendship between socialist China and North Korea.
At 18:07, the international passenger train No. 95, bound for Pyongyang Station, arrived on schedule, successfully marking the resumption of international railway service between the two countries after 6 years.
Ambassador Wang Yajun said that this is a joyful event and a crucial moment for the development of Sino-Korean relations. “This service will provide important logistical support to promote friendly exchanges and pragmatic cooperation between China and the DPRK, injecting new vitality into the development of bilateral relations,” he said.
At the Stamp Exhibition, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the DPRK’s philatelic industry, he noted that “the stamp encapsulates historical memory and the spirit of the times, fully demonstrating the achievements of the Korean revolution and socialist development, and passing on many beautiful stories of friendship between China and the DPRK.”
