MEXICO CITY, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday urged the U.S. government to conduct a “thorough” investigation into the death of a Mexican man who was among the fatal victims of last week’s shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas.
The victim, 32-year-old Garcia Hernandez, died Tuesday after spending several days hospitalized in critical condition following the Sept. 24 attack, the League of United Latin American Citizens confirmed.
Speaking at her daily morning press conference, Sheinbaum said Mexico has formally called on U.S. authorities to fully investigate the case. “Several diplomatic notes have been submitted demanding a thorough investigation,” the president said.
Sheinbaum said that the Mexican government is assisting the victim’s family with financial aid and legal support. “All the necessary arrangements were made so his mother could be there (in the United States),” she added.
Hernandez had lived and worked in the United States for two decades to support his children and had recently purchased his first home with his wife, Stephany Gauffeny.
According to U.S. media, the shooter, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, opened fire from a nearby rooftop on people inside the ICE centre before taking his own life.
