Today marks 55 years since the Young Lords, a revolutionary Black and Latino organization in the South Bronx, stormed Lincoln Hospital—transforming a neglected “butcher shop” into a symbol of community resistance.
In a 12‑hour takeover, they demanded dignity, better care, and a People’s Hospital for the South Bronx which for too long was and still is ignored by systemic neglect.
Their occupation wasn’t just a protest—it was a radical act of self-determination. The Young Lords showed us that when oppressive systems ignore our needs, we must rise, occupy the space, and rebuild from the ground up.
Their demand for a hospital that cared for the people—by the people—reverberates today as a rallying cry.
Let this anniversary be a call to arms for all who are fed up with neglect and inequality. It’s time to channel that radical spirit, disrupt corrupt power structures, and occupy the institutions that fail us.
Stand up, take back your community, and fight for a future built on revolutionary justice and community care.
