Translator’s Note: This reminds me of the myths and stories that surround “Buddha’s foot-prints” said to have been left on the flat surfaces of rocks – usually in remote areas or far-off places the historical Buddha never visited. How can a human foot-print (large or small) sink an inch or two into solid rock? Under normal conditions – this cannot happen. It is an absurdity under normal conditions. Clay, mud, or sand – yes – this can happen, even volcanic ash. As regards the size, it is obviously fake until proven otherwise. The right-foot being miles away is particularly hilarious as it suggests a stride of some considerable length. Perhaps the legs are five-miles long. Now, having accessed other texts regarding this story, information is slim on the ground, but this imprint is said to be on rocks located to the Southeast of the Mao Clan [苗族 – Miao Zu] Village – situated in the Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou province. Many of the original news stories broadcasting this odd episode are dated to around the 28th of August 2016, within Chinese language sources. The article I have translated below is from 2018 – and seems to involve the author actually going and looking for himself. Whereas as most other references give the measurements as “57cm long and 20cm wide and About 3cm deep” (all copying the original article no doubt) – this article states “58 cm long, 20 cm wide and about 3cm deep”. This is interesting as the author witnessed a re-measuring. Both Mr Gu and Mr Hu are referred using honorifics which suggest a paternal older uncle [大爷 – Da Ye] and a paternal younger uncle [叔叔 – Shu Shu] respectively. ACW (1.6.2025)

Deep within the mountains of Guizhou province (Southwest China), a mysterious “giant” footprint was discovered sank into the surface off a section of flat rock – located just outside a local village. As soon as this news spread, countless numbers travelled to the area to look for themselves. When compared with an average human foot in modern China, this giant version was more than three times that of an adult man. When I asked the villagers about this structure, even the most elderly did not know where the footprints came from. The more people looked, the more curious they became. A ruler was produced and measurements taken – the results of which shocked everyone.
“When I was a child, I heard adults say that there was a huge footprint on the stone-ledge situated here. It is definitely not something an ordinary people can produce. Everyone guessed that there must have been giants here in the past – or that they were left by our ancestors in ancient times,” said Elder (Paternal) Uncle Gu [顾] from the local village. Elder Uncle Gu was born in this village deep in the mountains of Guizhou. He is almost 70 years old this year. According to him, the footprints on the stone are at least a hundred years old, but it remains a mystery to this day.
As the origin of this giant footprint has remained a mystery for so many years, it has attracted countless curious tourists to the area. “We came here out of curiosity, and we could see that it was a left foot, and it was not left by an ordinary person, who looked like they had never worn shoes. The toes are clearly visible,” speculated Younger (Paternal) Uncle Hu [胡] – who lives hundreds of kilometres away. In order to find out the truth, some people even brought a ruler to measure the imprint.
After careful measurement, this mysterious footprint measured 58 cm long, 20 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. When the dimensions were established, everyone present was stunned and took a few steps back in apprehension. After a while, villager Uncle Gu broke the some more news: “There is another footprint similar to this deep in the mountains! It was discovered a few years ago, but because the mountain road is difficult to walk on, few people have actually seen it. According to the people who have seen it, the footprint is obviously made using the right foot.” All those present were struck with fear – what or who could have nade these foot-prints? Was it some unknow barbarian or primitive savage?

就因为这么多年一直没有弄清楚这神秘大脚印的来历，传出去后一时间吸引了无数好奇者前来围观。“我们也是因为听人说好奇才来看看的，到这一看就知道是一只左脚，而且不是一般人留下的，看起来还没有穿鞋子，脚趾都清晰可见”，家住几百公里外的胡叔叔开始推测了。为了一探究竟，还有人带着尺子来测量了。
经过仔细的测量，这神秘大脚印长达58厘米，宽有20厘米，踩下去的深度都有3厘米。数据一出，在场的所有人都惊呆了，吓得往后面退了几步。不一会儿，村民顾大爷又还是爆料：“大山深处还有一个一样大小的脚印呢！几年前被人发现的，不过因为山路实在难走，没有几个人真正见过的”，据看见的人说，那只脚印看得出来是右脚，刚好和这个配成一对，这说着说着大家偶读不寒而栗了，你们觉得这脚印是怎么回事啊？真的是野人留下的吗？
