Soviet Arctic Monument

USSR: Vladimir Putin Lays Flowers at the Soviet Arctic Monument! (27.3.2025)

Monument To the Defenders of the Soviet Arctic!

Opened in 1974 on the 30th Anniversary of the defeat of Nazi German forces in the Arctic, the Monument is located at an altitude of about 200 metres above the sea level. It is here that Soviet Artillery Crews stood their ground, repelling enemy attacks. Standing 42 metres tall, the monument is one of the tallest in Russia. Also on display at the site are anti-aircraft guns, neighboured by a sloped triangular pyramid symbolising a flag at half-mast in mourning.

My Maternal grandfather – Arthur Gibson – fought in the North Atlantic during WWII, serving aboard the Minesweeper – HMS Beaumaris Castle (FY 992)! Part of his job was keeping the sea-lanes free of Nazi German mines so that the Russian Arctic Convoys to traverse the areas North of Scotland to and from our allies the USSR! Alexander Werth travelled on one such Convoy travelling from the UK to the USSR and recorded his experience in a now out of print book about Stalingrad. Thank you USSR and Russia!
