South Africa has named Sandton Drive – a street in the Jewish neighbourhood of Parkmore in Johannesburg – after Leila Khaled, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) Politburo, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Khaled is considered the first woman to hijack an aeroplane. In August 1969, she hijacked an Israeli El Al aeroplane and diverted it to Syria, seeking the release of Palestinian prisoners and drawing the world’s attention to the Palestinian cause.
Later, Leila Khaled hijacked a TWA aeroplane that landed in London. She was arrested and later released, and now lives in Jordan with her husband and two children. The South African government withdrew its ambassador to Tel Aviv – Sisa Nampene – following the violent suppression of the “Great March of Return” in the Gaza Strip by the occupation, which led to the deaths of dozens of civilians.

جنوب أفريقيا تطلق اسم ليلى خالد على شارع في العاصمة جوهانسبرغ
أطلقت جنوب أفريقيا اسم عضو المكتب السياسي للجبهة الشعبية ليلى خالد على شارع “Sandton Drive” الواقع وسط حي باركمور اليهودي في العاصمة جوهانسبرج، حسب صحيفة “جيروزاليم بوست” الإسرائيلية.
وتعتبر ليلى خالد أول امرأة تقوم بخطف طائرة، في آب/أغسطس 1969 حيث قامت بخطف طائرة تابعة لشركة العال الإسرائيلية وتحويل مسارها إلى سوريا، بهدف إطلاق سراح أسرى في سجون الاحتلال، ولفت أنظار العالم إلى القضية الفلسطينية. وبعد فترة قامت بخطف طائرة TWA الأمريكية التي هبطت في لندن وتم اعتقالها وأفرج عنها بعد ذلك وتعيش الآن في الأردن مع زوجها وولديها.
وسحبت حكومة جنوب أفريقيا سفيرها في تل أبيب، سيسا نومبين، على خلفية قمع الاحتلال بشكل عنيف المشاركين في مسيرة العودة الكبرى في قطاع غزة، مما أدى لاستشهاد عشرات المواطنين.
