What must not be forgotten is that Xu Yun’s biography is not just a ‘dry’ text of historical information, but also records and transmits the genuine Ch’an Dharma to all of humanity. I call on all beings to read this completed (2005) edition, and record and report any errors that might become apparent. If we all do this, then eventually Xu Yun’s biography will become a near perfect text, like the classic books of the past, only relevant for the modern age – Ch’an Master Jing Hui
Of course, Emperor Ashoka could not simply expect to take all the credit for his new approach to defining reality, but instead created a set of ‘religious-like’ texts, the content of which was anything but ‘religious’ in the old sense, and ascribing their creation to a ‘mythical’ being who lived sometime in the distant past.
In this regard, the path of the Buddha is deeply ‘political’, and those who practice it in support of social systems that run counter to Buddhist ethics, are in reality inverting and denying the true revolutionary spirit of the Buddha.
