British Medical Association severs ties with Israel over Gaza, Palantir
BySKWAWKBOX (SW)02/07/2025
Doctors overwhelmingly tell professional body to end links because of genocide and infiltration of pro-Israel spyware firm into NHS
In a series of motions to their ‘Annual Reps Meeting’ conference in Liverpool, doctors have voted overwhelmingly to instruct their trade union, the British Medical Association (BMA), to break off relations with the Israel Medical Association (IMA), and to seek its suspension from the World Medical Association (WMA).
The five motions passed, by large majorities, were as follows:
• oppose the government’s adoption of the data platform created and run by Palantir, a genocide-supporting US firm whose bosses have boasted of killing people, throughout the NHS
• affirm that criticism of Israel is not antisemitic
• oppose the victimisation of medical students and healthcare workers who have advocated for Palestine
• condemn the destruction of healthcare services and the killing of healthcare workers in Gaza, demand the immediate release of detained HCWs in Gaza; and urge the UK government to support the ICC and ICJ in holding accountable those guilty of war crimes, including Israeli doctors who have participated in or supported torture of Palestinians in Israeli jails.
• suspend engagement with the Israeli Medical Association until it affirms medical neutrality and condemns attacks on healthcare in Gaza.
The BMA said the numerous motions on Palestine reflected “the grave concerns that doctors in the UK have about the Gaza conflict”.
The conference is the BMA’s sovereign authority and mandates the organisation’s policy.
In November 2023, a large number of Israeli doctors signed a letter calling for the destruction of the al Shifa hospital and other hospitals in Gaza, supporting Israel’s lie that the hospitals were ‘Hamas command centres’. The Israeli group Doctors for Human Rights condemned the letter; the IMA took no action against the genocidal doctors.
Arab-Jewish writer Alon Mizrahi said of the BMA motions that:
This could be the biggest win for the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement in 25 years. This is really huge.
