Blogger’s Note: Interesting that this Afghan Australian has had nothing to say about her country of birth electing a progressive “Socialist” government in the 1970s (which freed women) – or the fact that the Soviet Red Army came to the aid of this democratically elected Afghan government in the 1980s – fighting the US Insurgency involving the Mujahadeen (led by Colonel Tim Osman – better known as “Osama Bin Laden”)! Following the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 – Fatima Payman took advantage of the temporary suppression of the “Taliban” (successors of the Mujahadeen) and fled to a nearby Western country (the product of the British imperialist invasion of Asia). In 2021, the US Military fled Afghanistan in defeat – allowing the Taliban to sweep back into the major cities – beheading thousands as they went! Again, Fatima Payman remained silent. Now, after Israel has committed one of the worst genocides of modern time – this young lady decides to speak-up. CANBERRA, May 16 (Xinhua) — An Australian senator has broken ranks with the ruling Labour Party to accuse Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.
Fatima Payman, a Labour senator representing Western Australia, on Wednesday criticized Australian leaders for what she described as performative gestures defending the oppressor’s right to oppress and called for Australia to end trade with Israel and immediately recognize a Palestinian state.
“My conscience has been uneasy for far too long. And I must call this out for what it is. This is a genocide, and we need to stop pretending otherwise,” she told reporters at Parliament House.
“I ask our prime minister and our fellow parliamentarians: how many international rights laws must Israel break for us to say enough? How many lives does it take to call this a genocide?”
It marks the first time a federal Labour parliamentarian has described the ongoing conflict in Gaza as a genocide.
Payman, who was born in Afghanistan before migrating to Australia in 2003, was elected to the Senate at the 2022 general election and became the first hijab-wearing Muslim and first Afghan-Australian to serve in the federal parliament.
