The body of Venerable Luang Pho Daeng was photographed for this article on January 8th, 2015. He sits upright in the crossed-legged meditation position, wearing his saffron robe and a pair of sunglasses. The body, which is often terrifying and disturbing when first seen, sits within a glass case to protect it. The sunglasses, although they appear disrespectful, are actually designed to protect his eye and prevent unnecessary damage from contact with excessive sunlight. He has been sat upright with sunglasses on for the last 40 years and has proven very popular with tourists.

Ven. Luang Pho Daeng died in 1973 at the age of 79 – and was the Head Monk in charge of administrating the spiritual training and day to day running of his temple (see details below). He predicted the time of his own death, and left instructions as to what to do with his body. If it rotted – it was to be cremated – but if it did not rot, it was to be placed on public display. The point of this is to inspire future generations of Buddhists to follow the Buddhist moral discipline and keep their minds focused upon the inherent ‘suffering’ that defines material existence. The virtue and moral purity of the Ven. Luang Pho Daeng is believed to have resulted in his body not rotting, with the ‘moral force’ he developed following the Dharma maintaining the upright position of his body.

The Ven. Luang Pho Daeng passed away whilst immersed in a deep state of silent and profound meditation after weeks of fasting (and other devotional activities) – which is believed to have contributed to its natural preservation. Some people are of the opinion that the Ven. Luang Pho Daeng has reduced his heart-beat so that it is virtually impossible to detect, and that he is still ‘existing’ in a state of deep meditation. Although his skin is gray and dry – it certainly does not seem like that of a person who has been dead for over 40 years! The mouth of Ven. Luang Pho Daeng is slightly open and his original gums and teeth still look fresh. The body of Ven, Luang Pho Daeng can be seen at the Wat Khunaram (temple), situated on Ko Samui island in Thailand’s Surat Thani Province.

Luang Pho Daeng

Luang Pho Daeng
