Down House: Meeting Darwin’s Bees! (9.7.2022)

We have visited Down House a number of times in the past for educational needs – and to marvel at Darwin’s copy of Marx’s ‘Das Kapital’ that is no longer on display (follow the link to read my article on the Buddhist Marxism Alliance UK website)! We last came in March (2022) as ‘Lockdown’ was abating! However, at this time we noticed that there was no Bees! We were told by a member of staff working in the ‘Out-House’ that the Bees are only at Down House during the Summer months and that they are moved to a warmer area (possibly in-doors) for the rest of the year!

This is how ‘truth’ (whatever that is) is discovered, strengthened and put to work in the service of others! A Red Army, a Red Envelop and a Red Herring – we must learn to distinguish one from another and take the path that best expresses the highest expression of human nature!

If anyone can repair this, please contact the Temple. Upon reflection I suspect children climbing the elephants have not helped matters over the years… The left-hand elephant nobly sustained our two children!

The attitude of the Buddha exists within the sacred space of this temple in a country which otherwise advocates a brutal and uncaring socio-economic ideology and society! The Buddha would never have accepted this system as being ‘valid’ or applicable for attaining and living with a healthy mind and body!

This means that incorrect assumptions are made premised upon false, incomplete and inaccurate information. Within Chinese Buddhism, the Buddha was born around 1029/28 BCE and died around 949/48 BCE. However, in Thailand this has all been reduced by around 500-years so that the Buddha is now assumed to have been born in 545 BCE and passed away in 465 BCE.

Shanti-Deva refused to conform to the ‘strict’ Hinayana-Mahayana Path – simply because he did not have to. He had already realised enlightenment ‘here and now’ and did not require any further contrivance to do so. This is the lesson of his story.
