The malware could invade and manipulate computers and servers, allowing the agency to steal archives and data.

The agency used the infected software programs to conduct cyberattacks and theft against dozens of military institutes and high-tech enterprises, the ministry said. They have alerted the victims to the attacks to minimize potential losses.

Wang was given an administrative penalty according to the law, the ministry said, without giving details.

The ministry urged the public, especially IT workers, to be wary of such traps when offering technical services. They advised individuals to keep evidence and report suspicious activities to the authorities.

Recently, China’s National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center reported that during the handling of a cyberattack case on NPU, they successfully extracted a spyware sample called Second Date, which is a network spy weapon developed by the NSA and operates covertly in thousands of network devices spread across multiple countries worldwide.

The MSS stressed that cyberspace is increasingly becoming a new battlefield for safeguarding national security. Without cybersecurity, there is no national security, and no stable operation of the economy and society, while the interests of the general public are also difficult to guarantee. The MSS called for solidarity to strengthen security awareness, and to enhance security capabilities, so as to jointly safeguard cybersecurity.

‘At around 20:00 hrs on September 12th, 2023 – the Chengbei Police Station section of our Security Bureau – received a call from the concerned masses stating that a male suspect had poured engine oil on the stairs of the first floor of a fitness club located on Heyi Road (causing three people to fall and be injured). The Public Security Organs immediately conducted an on the spot investigation. It was found that – Zhang Moucheng (张某成) – was guilty of spilling the engine-oil – a resident of a nearby community. He was dissatisfied with the noise emanating from the fitness club and so decided to spill engine-oil in retaliation. At present, due to his criminal behaviour – Zhang Moucheng – has been sentenced to “12-days Administrative Detention” by the Public Security Organs in accordance with the law.’
